I just bought a '98 115hp motor with wiring. The previous owner cut the wires coming from the motor loom to the Tach. It's easy enough to re-connect the wires color(s) to color(s). But what confuses me is that the first three are the Tach wires...purple, black and gray and each have screw lugs indicating that they weren't connected to the wiring loom. So how should I wire them?

black and purple were probably tied into your key switch, not sure why the grey is like that, should just be a direct connection, why in the world didnt he just unplug the thing??

Re: Tach Wiring

Remove the ring terminals and make all connections with butt splices like the red ones.

I just looked at the wiring again and it's possible the PO put on those ring terminal to provide power to the volt, trim and fuel gauges (?).

Silvertip, I'll do that.... re-connect the wires with a butt splices but will connect the purple and black wires to a fuse panel which will provide 12v and ground then connect each gauge to a separate fuse.

that is only going to be enough power for your gauges, since it is turned on and off by your key switch it is used for all gauges, I did not fuse mine, but I would think a single inline fuse would do for all gauges if you want to fuse it. power everything else off of your main power wires, that run through fuse block and switches. you can use bullet connectors for the power connections if you want, it can make replacing a gauge slightly easier. butt splices work fine though
