I have been reading some of the post on here and 1 is right on about my needs, but still leaves me puzzled slightly. I have a 1994 mariner 75 hp that I have added 90 carbs to and have adjusted the timing accordingly. runs well. I have bought a ss competition tach so I can play with props and make sure I don't over rev. I understand it should be a 12 pole 6 cycle motor. which, by the directions say the tach should be set on 4. but at 4 I am showing idle speed of 1500 rpms and that doesn't seem correct. I have played with it and have settled on setting it at 8 but that seem incorrect based on the instructions. I was just checking to see if anyone has this tach and what they ended up setting it at. No response from the company. I like the way the tach looks but if it doesn't read right it may as well go swimming. thanks for any replies

Exactly what "ss competition tach" did you buy? Model number?

Your engine does indeed have a 12 "pole" stator that delivers 6 "pulses" per engine rev. Therefore the setting should be "6P" (provided you bought a tach for an outboard and not an automotive tach). Some tachs have settings numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. Those numbers have "relative" meanings which means you need the instructions to tell you what each number relates to. If the tach is universal, then it will have settings for both two and four stroke outboards as well as auto-based, 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines..

it is a marine tach outboard and inboard. it claims 12 poles should be set at speed ratio of 4000 rpms=4.0 6000 rpms=6.0 8000 rpms=8.0 why the 3 different settings for 12 poles. does that mean it is corrected at 600 rpms if it is set on 6.
