I have looked in all the FAQ's trying to solve my tacho problem no still at a loss.

Motor is a 1984-85 4 cyclinder Mariner 80 Hp.

I am using a SW brand tacho with a numbered rotating switch on the back with 2 pins under which align with holes.

I assume that the numbers refer to the number of cyclinders of the motor and need to be set to the right position. My trouble is that the tacho is old and there is no marks to say where the pins should be, only markings are 1,2,3,4,6, on switch.

On the close's setting I can get the tacho reads 7,500 Rpm @ WOT. The motor is fine and purrs along and does not seem to be reving high, but it is a bit unnerving not knowing if the motor is over-reving.

I have tried another tacho but same brand and same age also without marks, and it reads the same at WOT.

If I need to to buy a new tacho, what brand would work with this motor?

Any help please.

Thanks.

Re: Tacho question

Your engine has 12 pole alternator. If you get Teleflex gauge you would set to 6P. I have a Faria which has 1,2,3,4,5,6....It sets at 5 which corresponds to 12 pole. I don't know about the SW. It may not be compatable with a 2 cycle outboard. Hope this helps.
