i have a 1989 evenrude 200 hp omc. the tach failed when i was attempting to start it. it was hard starting and when it finally fired it revved up before i could pull back on the throttle. tach went up then fell back and is now not working. it zeros out when ign is on but won't work otherwise.
i think i might have a problem with the rectifier but can't seem to be able to locate it to test it. this is a 6 cylinder motor.

any help would be appreciated.

Re: tachomerter

The tach acting strange is a symptom of rectifier problems. Mine went dead short and burned t5he wiring as it killed the battery. It is mounted on the top of the block, with most of the unit sticking down into the water jacket for cooling.
Not difficult to change, just expensive, approx $400 CDN
