The tachometer on my boat has been "dead" for quite a long time. recently ive been at getting the boat restored to working condition, and the tach isnt cooperating. the needle sits at the 6 o clock position and doesnt move a millimeter to 12v power or to 12v power + signal from rectifier. whats wrong with it? do i have to buy a new one (kinda pricey)? thanks.

Re: Tachometer "dead"

It's not bad until you've proven that you have +12 volts, the tach signal, AND ground. Missing any one of them will cause it to not function.

Re: Tachometer "dead"

well i tested my wires this way...
to test for +12v, i touched my (multimeter) red lead to the yellow wire, and black lead to black wire. got 11.57v.
to test for ground, touched red to black, and black to yellow, got -11.56v
and i didnt really know how to test for tach signal, i just assumed. i touched the red probe to the gray wire and the black probe to black wire. i got about 3v.

Keep your eye on ebay. I just replaced my tach today and bought the replacement from ebay for $29 plus shipping.

What brand is your tach? I sent my Faria back under warranty (9 years old) and they replaced it for $30.

Harborfreight always has those automotive type tech for about $10. I wonder if it will work for outboard...
