I have a 1993 88 johnson that the tachometer will not work on. I have a good ground, good battery power but no signal voltage at the tach itself. I need to know where the signal is sent from off the motor to the tach, aka the spark plugs, coils etc.

Re: Tachometer for 88 johnson

First thing to check is the battery charging? Put a voltmeter on the battery post and check. Then crank the engine and run around 1500 RPM and re-check the voltage it should go up. If not you have a regulator/rectifier problem more than likely. The tach and the regulator/rectifier are connected electrically so normally the tach shows a problem first. The tach is connected to the powerpack with the gray wire (signal) Hope this helps.
