I have an 1975 belgian mercury 500 (50hp), manual start, thunderbolt ignition which i want to equip with a tachometer. Faria tachs are available in Croatia, and i wonder how to make the connections to the motor. The tach has signal pole, battery positive and a ground, as well as the light connector. Since i don't have electicity producing on board, i will recharge the 12V battery from time to time, and will the tacho working draw too much juice from the battery?

the tacho shouldnt draw very much power at all... but i would still keep it topped off. im suprised you cant get a rectifier for your motor. that would allow you to charge your batteries onboard. please post the serial number of your motor and i can tell you if its avail or not....

the "S" gets connected to either of the yellow wires at the stator/recirifer
the "I" gets connected to the 12volt source
the "G" gets connected to the ground/negative
and the light also gets connected to the 12volt, but i would install a simple switch inline so that the light isnt running and drawing power during daylight hours, this will help extend the battery, ever so much.

what type of stator do you have? does it have 2 yellow wires/or two yellow with red stripe wires coming out? if you do have these wires, you can hook up a simple rectifier to charge everything....

looks like this

Thank You for a such quick reply.
The serial number is : 9082741, and it was manufactured in Petit Rechain, Belgium, in 1975. The flywheel does not have any teeth on its rim for cranking motor, so I presumed that it didn't have stator for electricity producing. I will look at it asap, and post You a picture to see.

Re: tachometer installing

according to my manual, you do not have a stator. you have a simple coil assembly and a switch box(just like my lil evinrude)

if i am reading this correctly you should have a switch box with 4 terminals:
from top to bottom...red
blue
white
green

connect the "S" terminal on the tach to the BLUE terminal at the switchbox on your motor. connect your"I" to a 12 volt source, and the "G" to the negative/ground
and of course hook up the light also for night time cruising.

your motor is not capable of a charging system, sorry.

good luck, and let us know how this turns out. that way other people can learn from our lesson.

m ikey

Re: tachometer installing

Hi again, I just bought the Faria tacho yesterday, and imediately hooked it the way You explained, but nothing happened. The light in the tacho works, though, but not rpms. The blue contact on the switchbox is connected to the magneto assembly, to the engine block (grounded)and to the kill engine switch. Maybe some of these wires arent ment to be there. I am going to check the tacho at the electronics repair, just in case. Again, according to the Seloc manual I got for the mercs, the blue is for the tacho installment, but i do not know what is the cause of that. Galvic

Re: tachometer installing

Hello. I am having the same problem. My engine is a Mercury 50hp 1969mod. Manual start. It is a contact for a tachometer in the front, but the wires are cut. Do anyone know what type of tachometer I can use? I have no battery onboard. A label says "use quicksilver tachometer only".

Re: tachometer installing

You guys need a tach that runs off the switchbox, not an alternator driven tach, it won't work with manual models.
