I have a 1995 5.7 liter mercruiser which I can not get the tachometer to work on. Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this? I was told to get a test light and check test at the coil but not sure how accurate that recommendation was.

In addition to the tachometer not working I am also having issues with the following:Oil Pressure, Trim, Speedometer, Fuel.

The root of all the gauge issues may be connected but not sure so wanted to start with the tach and start ruling some items out.

Any recommendations and assistance on either issue is appreciated.

Your gauge problems may well be related (except for the speedo, which operates by air pressure from a pitot, not electricity in most cases). Start with generic gauge wiring diagram, courtesy of Silvertip:
