Tachometer started going in reverse

I just replaced the voltage regulator on my 75hp 2-stroke Evinrude outboard engine. Everything runs fine and my battery is charging once again. The only thing is that the tachometer immediately goes into reverse when the engine is started. The new voltage regulator does not have a purple wire, but the instructions that came with it said the purple wire is no longer necessary.

Any suggestions?

This sounds like a Polarity issue, check all your wires and make sure you replaced them in the correct order. Also if you happened to disconnect the gauge itself make sure all contacts are correct. they should be color coded, you can look up marine wire color codes for proper identification. hope this helps

Grey wire only (pulse wire). Red is a hot wire -- may see it in the wiring running to the gauge lighting cluster. Post a model number for your motor.

It will not work hanging out there in the air as internal diodes must bleed off to engine ground
