I am redoing all the wiring on my boat because nothing worked right and all the wiring was a birds net and butt connectors everywhere. Anyway I want to wire a tach. to my 67 60hp johnson motor. I am not sure of the brand of tack but looks almost brand new and has a "Q" on the gauge face. The posts in the rear are for ground, ignition, and send. The only one I don't understand is the send post. Does anyone know what wires to this post?

Re: tachometer wiring help

ground is obvious, SEND is where the gray wire MCM is speaking of gets connected. It's the connection that receives the signal. Does the controls housing have a three prong outlet on it?

EDIT: It may not apply to you older motor and controls, but like in my case I have a plug on the controls that is for tach harness. The wiring colors that apply to mine are purple/black/gray

Re: tachometer wiring help

I do have a harness but there is nothing plugged into it. I have the male end of the harness but there is not a female end on my boat. The interior of my boat was professionally built with bass tracker assemblies. Everything in the boat is custom. Though my boat is a 1967 starcraft. Everything is done well except the wiring which someone has definatly tampered with not knowing how to do things correctly the have alot of the wires with short lengths pieced together with butt connectors to make one length. Its pretty ugly so I took all wiring out and re-ran new and soldered major connections. Though I did keep that harness I don't think it will do me any good.
