Re: tachometer?

ok I'm sorry but what is the difference between hooking it up to the switch or hooking it up to hot and ground wire to just test it. i did hook the grey wire and then checked it with voltmeter to be sure it was getting voltage.

Not sure what the difference would be jonny. Maybe the purple wire has a lower voltage when you turn the key. Just never heard of anyone connecting a tach to direct voltage; needs to be connected to a "switched" source, like a car stereo.

Re: tachometer?

I'll try this one more time. Tachometers for two-stroke outboards need a signal from the stator. The stator is not dependent on the number of cylinders an engine has -- it is the charging system for the engine and the tach senses the number of pulses from the STATOR -- not the ignition system. I/O engines on the other hand send a signal to a tach that comes from the ignition system. Therefore the tach needs to know how many cylinders the engine has. Some tachs can be used in both applications so they have a selection for PULSES or CYLINDERS. If you select pulses, it needs to know how many. If you select CYLINDERS, it needs to know how many. If the tach is stuck on 5K it is probably toast. Don't connect wires at random or you will continue to fry tachs. There are only three wires (four with the light).

Re: tachometer?

yes silver i understand that now u explained it perfectly the first time very well. i have a tach that has 6 different settings on it. 4c,6c,8c. which are cylinders. and 4p,6p,8p which are for pulses. i understand that and i have it set on 6p. no problem there. then it has 3 wires on it excluding the lights. a red, black, and gray. i hooked the gray to the gray in my controle. then instead of cutting the purple and black wires on the switch until i know i had a working tach. i just hooked the red to a pos. wire and the black to a neg. wire under the dash. the tach did not move when applied voltage and nor did it when ran. i checked the red and black with meter and 12v there. and checked volts at grey wire from control which my book says is the sending wire for a tach. it had low volts that changed with the throttle. so unless the tach reqires somthing other than 12v on its pos. and neg. wires then the tach is bad and was bad when i left the boat shop. wich hes said it may be but if it was bad i can bring it back and get it replaced. thats what im doing monday.

Re: tachometer?

hello,
I recently had my tach stop working I tested the wires at the tach and the voltage at the purple wire is 12volts.
the voltage at the purple wire is 12 volts as well I understand this wire should have a pulse voltage?
Am I looking at a rectifier problem?
Thank You
