Tacky poly resin after cure

I'm sanding it now but I noticed that the part of the deck I did when it was 96 outside cured hard but remained tacky. Is this because of the temperature? It was causing the resin to cure very quick and it was about to give me a heat stroke.. I started doing the rest of it about 8:30pm when it cooled down a little. Is this gonna cause me any problems?

It may be laminating resin...which gets hard but keeps a tacky surface for ease of glassing again without sanding. The tack will go away over time...weeks to months. It isn't a problem except for plugging the sandpaper quickly if you try to sand. There is an additive (wax) for making laminating resin dry tack free.

Finishing resin already has the wax and drys tackless.

I'm using the same resin for the whole job and the part I layed when it was hot is tacky and the rest that I did at night was not. Same mixture.

That means it is finishing resin...I'd say you under catalyzed it, didn't stir well or had moisture problems. We know it wasn't from lack of heat, right?

may be he had laminating resin and when he laid it up at night the dew may have settled on it and caused it to dry tack free? in any case, I guess he could stir up another batch and ad some wax to it or spray it with PVA .........just a thought

Polyester resin will gel and cure under water. Try it some time. Catalyze a coupla ounces and then pour a half inch or so of water on top and let it set.

c/6
Hooty

I had the same problem on my project. I had one area that stayed tacky for about a week. Don't know why, it never happened on any other point in the project, and the area affected was smaler than the area that pot covered, so it wasn't a catalyst issue. It did cure hard and tacky free after a week or so with no problems...

It sounds like I should not worry about it. It just seemed a little strange to me. Thanks for the input.
