Tags and Licenses?

I am looking into buying a canoe for my family and found some on Craigslist in my area. Some say they don't have any licenses or tags on them. In other ads some of the boats show tags. Should I buy a boat without tags? Is that something I get on my own?

Thanks.

if it has had a motor on it, it needs registration. you really need to check with the boat police in AZ.

Same as Tash here, as long as it is hunman powered you don't need numbers, if you throw even a trolling motor on it you do.
That is in Indiana though, call your local DNR and ask.

In many states even a canoe needs a tag of some sort. The tax authorities want to get into your wallet regardless what you own. While the canoe may not need numbers, there is usually a permit fee and sticker involved.

I understand that any watercraft that is used on any public waterway needs registered. If used in private ponds/lakes it is not needed. So any waterway that is governed by the local, state, or federal government will need to be regeistered.

You really need to check with your state's authorities.

In Michigan, any boat that can have a motor mounted must be titled and registered (or if it's for rental or commercial use). Thus, a canoe for personal use only need not be titled or registered, even on public navigable water. As I recall, Minnesota's law is similar; from what other posters have said, so are most states. But you really need to check with Arizona.
