I have a 90's 2 stroke 8-hp outboard and over the weekend I noticed lower-end oil was leaking from the water drain when I put the motor in the tilt-up position. I checked the oil level and about a 1/4 of the oil has already dripped out. I refilled the lower-end so I could use it.

What do you think the problem is and how much should it cost to repair?

Are you talking about the water drain on the fwd of the unit? Often unburned fuel residue will masquerade as LU lubricant, and a "leak" is just that -- residue -- and not a leak at all. Was there any water contamination in the LU lubricant? If not, the LU may possibly just have been under-filled. If there was creamy water contamination, you want to replace the LU seals. Verify the model/serial. Parts are available if it is an M8B. If you are handy, you can buy the kit from any dealer (myself included): 3B2873213M LOWER UNIT GASKET KIT 8B $30.95. While you have the LU dropped, it would be a good time to replace the water pump kit as well; Part # 3B2873221M $42.47

And don't forget the service manual so you know what to do...And more importantly...What NOT to do.

Right. And if you have an 8A, it's just plain too old to get parts.
