Re: Take a look at my plugs and tell me what you think - 1989 Evinrude 175

Well, I went for it. Decided to investigate both the head and exhaust gaskets, better safe than sorry and all that.

1. Removed port cylinder head
-One bolt snapped, inside the block (no stud is protruding from the surface of the block). It is the lowest starboard (right) bolt on the port bank.
-All other bolts came out fine
-Cylinder, piston and even gasket look good. Some minor rusting and scoring on the top of the piston (no sure from what, remember compression was 100psi even when I check a few days ago). After inspection I'm leaning to the leak coming from the exhaust gasket.

2. Tried to remove the exhaust cover
-Three bolts snapped. Two have a significant amount of bolt left protruding from the block, the other has less but exact amount is unknown
-Couldn't remove the lowest two outermost bolts on the cover because the cowling is in the way (these bolts are loose and not snapped). Not sure what to do about this.
-Overall couldn't get the exhaust cover off. Tried hard, but didn't get brutish on the thing. Either way with all the studs protruding and not being able to remove the two lowest bolts I'm fighting an uphill battle with the powerhead in place.

Looks like Im going to be removing the powerhead to be able to properly get to these bolts to have them drilled/tapped by a machinist. Im leaning to having all the threads re-tapped just to be on the safe side.

Any advice on how to proceed? Anything in particular I should be instructing the machinist to do or watch out for?

I'm sorry to hear about breaking bolts...salty motors will always eat a few! I'm also sorry that you couldn't get the cover off because of the lower two screws. If you cannot get them out, you're gonna have to remove more stuff. Even if you were able to cut off the screw heads to slip the cover off, you still would not likely be able to get new screws on. So, more stuff will have to be removed.

Sorry for your pain,

Mas

Hey thanks, appreciated that one as I tip one back for the sea which I will hopefully see again soon

From the pics there is scoring on the cylinder walls, as on the piston, and on the cylinder head cover. Nonetheless compression is 100psi on this (and all) cylinders. Go figure. Also interesting is the contrast between the lowest cylinder wall and the others. To my eyes the gasket looks to be in good condition. As does the mating surface on the cylinder head cover. Oh and my water passage diverters look great, minus the gunk blocking the passageways. Im just trying to look on the bright side here.

These pics were taken before the exhaust cover kerfuffle.

Got the powerhead prepped for removal today. Removed power pack, coils, T/T box, wiring harness, starter, VRO pump and plumbing, etc

Going to leave the cabs and intake plenum on...is this a bad idea? Also probably going to remove the flywheel, but if I do then Id have to remove the stator and timer base at a minimum. I would leave the reg/rec on most likely.

Will make sure I have all the bolts and pull it tomorrow time permitting. So far I have removed:
-(4) bolts on rubber mounts
-(3) nuts driving downward on the back of the exhaust cover
-(2) bolts on the lower front of the block, driving aft parallel to the ground
-(1) Shift rod bolt
-Two bolts and two nuts driving upward on the bottom of the front of the lower cowling, near the steering arm

Am I missing any bolts? I have the manual but Im not sure how to translate their terms for each fastener into a location on the bock.

To summarize:
1. Do you think I should remove the flywheel, stator and timerbase prior to taking the powerhead to a machinist?
2. Should I take off or leave the plenum and carbs on?
3. Am I missing any bolts?

Ill have pics up later tonight.

Pics:

1. The snapped bolts:

2. Illustrative of the bolts on the topside of the motor I have removed. There are two additional I loosened on the underside of the cowling next to the steering arm.

Can anyone help me out with the questions in my previous post? Have I removed all necessary bolts to pull the powerhead?

Wanted to give everyone an update, got the powerhead off successfully. The key were the six bolts coming up verically from the midsection.

Anyhow, took the other head off and got some experienced eyes on the thing. Verdict is the block is too corroded to warrant repair. The cylinder walls were corroded down to where only the sleeve was sealing against the gasket in multiple places.

If anyone has a 1989-91 175 stocker powerhead (old 235 block) in or near South Florida they want to part with please shoot me a PM!
