I've always given 2 weeks notice in writing when leaving a job. I think it's just a courtesy. Of course I have never left with bad feeling at the Company or a boss.
Like some others have said, don't burn your bridges. You never know, in 5 years when you apply for a new job, it may be your old boss doing the hiring.
I work at an "at will" Company now and can be fired for no reason. But the way I look at it, I was looking for a job when I got this one, so if they fire me, they fire me.
