I have a 1977 (or so) 90hp Evinrude V-4 thats been sitting, unused for about 3-years (kinda sad, I know). When i put it into storage 3-years ago, it wasn't running quite right (I can't even remember what the troubles were). However, when I did put it away, i did fog the engine and ran stable thru the carbs. Question, when i bring it out this spring, what steps should i take to get it running & diagnose problems? My thoughts..1. Verify compression in all cylinders 2. Rebuild carbs 3. Replace fuel filter/fuel lines 4. New water pump. Thoughts??

Welcome sneakdog!

Sounds like ya' gotta' plan there. Don't forget the gear lube. Won't hurt to change it out. Give the over heat alarm a check too from both heads and check the spark.

Six pack of longnecks on the side don't hurt neither... :D

Possibly thermostats but I would get it running first.

Re: Taking it out of Mothballs

thanks for the added info.

Couple of "newbie" questions.

1. When I check compression, i should have the throttle wide open correct? I am assuming just remove all plugs and check compression hole by hole.

2. How do i check for good spark? Just pull the plug out, crank it over and watch? Are there grounding issues? I don't want to damage power packs, etc.

Thanks.
