Yup... That boat, haulnazz15, was already in my search folder. Meets many of my criteria.

QC, you're killing me -- and I mean KILLING ME.

That's a compliment.

Phil . . . Dude . . . you need a trip to Havasu. Bucket list for sure, but I am thinking before you buy anything ;)

I like the Ultra even though I am not super high on the manufacturer. The Ultra Sealth is the most unique of all of our customs out here. My preference is the Sleek 26 Heritage because I like the offset passageway through the mid-cabin. 250 and 260 Eliminator Eagles are great. My absolute favorite is the Hallett 240. Hasn't really changed in 20 years; they just stopped building them new. Heavy, so they are slower than most, but solid feel and roominess is second to none. No mid-cabin though.

Suffice it to say that the boating landscape here in the NE USA is decidedly different. Hey, they're Mercs/Bravos, so doesn't matter much if I am the only guy with one of those hulls around.

TOTALLY agree. A few Bravo 3s, but almost 100% Bravo 1s and Xs. One trip down the Bridgewater Channel and you'd see more than you could in a month of searching. It has really transitioned to tunnels primarily. I've shown you most of the Vs that they're still building. My Carrera hasn't been built for a few years:

I feel a business trip to my Southern Cal office coming up. Lake Havasu is probably a 4-hour drive from where I visit. ??

Wait... i just googled your hometown, QC. I am always out in Fullerton, Ca. Our office is right next to Cal State Fullerton campus, and I stay on campus when I am there (because only an idiot wouldn't stay on a college campus if given the chance.)

I grew up in Fullerton. Mom, wife and son all went to CSF . . . Yes, 4 hours.

Hey "Philster", just to play a little devils advocate here, as per the title of your thread, that Sleek Enforcer "QC" pointed out earlier can pretty easily be done with your current boat. Down in our neck of the woods, there are several custom shops that cater to the go-fast/Poker-run crowd. There is at least 1, 29' Fountain Fever that was converted to open bow. Nothing major structural to deal with, ie: hull, stringers, cap-rail, and no modifications to existing helm, or powertrain. Just some fiberglass work. I'm sure it's more involved than that, but still 10%-20% the cost of something new. It must be nice to have these sort of dilemmas.

Definitely not modding the Scarab. Per the list of 'musts', she's gotta be new or darn close to it.

Re: Talk me out of... err, umm... or into this boat purchase...?

I've got a buddy out there in SoCal doing some leg work as we speak. He vacations at Havasu and knows some of the popular boats. So, I've got a body on the ground to do some homework.

Tomorrow I see the Checkmate 24 BRX with 300xs O/B. Hitting this from both coasts.

QC's got me thinking -- no doubt about it. Don't know how it could work logistically, and I would have to find a gem of a deal, wherein the boat is pretty damn new, powered right and falls into budget. Might not work out, but in this day and age you never know.

Any challenger has to top the 24 BRX in value for dollar, within my budget and requirements for a hot boat with performance and it just can't be very used.

Re: Talk me out of... err, umm... or into this boat purchase...?

UPDATE: Went to see the boat. Walk up, take one look at it, and I am like (in my head), "Holy cr~p, this has the V -- if ya could call it that -- of a Ranger Bass boat and maybe a smidgen more free board (which is slightly more than none).... seems decent in size though... but darn, this blows".

I hold poker-faced as we walk, then Mike, the owner of the biz, says, "Ok, so that's the 21 which is more like a Checkmate you saw growing up, and here is the 24 BRX."

I must say, the 24'-er is whole different story. First thing I noticed was that she has good freeboard -- offshore ocean-running freeboard of a 27' beast? No. But good freeboard -- way better than a pic would show. I noticed the rubrail sits such that there is another 6-8 inches of freeboard that they eye doesn't see in the pics. The windshield is low relative to the top of the deck, but relative to the seating position, it is not.

It's an honest-to-goodness V-bottom boat. She was bigger than I pictured in my head.

The deck inside doesn't sit such that your knees are above the gunwales or too high up on them. You are definitely in the boat.

Incentives: The motors. Apparently, and this should be of no surprise because we all know O/B engines aren't dynoed to precisely the HP # stamped on the cowling AND there is more to an engine than H.P.... well, apparently, the 300 Optimax XS will mop the floors with the 300 Verado. The perforance numbers indicate a 50+ H.P. difference between them, and the XS does its business best at higher RPM. Ergo, Merc and Checkmate have incentives to make the Verado an interesting tease. After incentives, a 300 HP Verado is at least 5 grand cheaper that the 300 HP XS.

I will add more details, but I've done as much diligence as I can spare right now. After a look, the 24 BRX remains on the list. Oh, as for fit and finish, she is definitely finished and has the details to show it. Checkmates have always had a good build quality, and I know that before Baja infused them with some capital and resources they were trying to survive, so I am sure there are some Checkmates out there that suffered until very recently. I tried to find flaws with this rig, but they are only shortcomings versus heftier I/O's that are much more expensive. The bow is big. Seating up there is long and wide... the bullet nose makes it appear narrow.

Will add my pics in a few...

Did you catch the adult capacity of the boat?
