I bought this engine over 1-1/2 years ago to put on the Checkmate I was rebuilding. It's been one problem after another after another since I bolted it on - many of those problems have been resolved thanks to some smart people here on iboats.

This engine never really had any issues above half throttle, in fact it usually ran pretty decent once it got going. I usually saw around 6000 to 6200 rpm and roughly 60 to 63 mph at WOT. Then a couple of times it would only get to around 5800 rpm and 58 or so mph. This last time out it struggled to get to 5500 rpm, same prop and roughly the same loading as always.

There's a strong spark on all cylinders (1/2 inch on the spark tester). All the plugs looked roughly the same, they were slightly black and wet with gas/oil - I'd consider them to be normal. Compression ranged from 72 to 81 (checked cold). Full timing advance was dead nuts on 18 degrees before TDC (checked in a tank with a test prop). All the carbs were closing at the same instant, and all were fully opening. Lacking evidence of any obvious problems I pulled the heads to take a look, all cylinders had a good coating of oil in them and saw no evidence of water getting past the head gaskets. The last time I had the heads off (probably 15 to 20 running hours ago) there was some slight scoring in most of the cylinders. Now it's much worse in 4 of them, it's so bad that it easily catches my fingernail.

Unless some of the smart folks on iboats can talk me out of it, this engine is getting taken apart this weekend to be sold for parts. I could see doing a rebuild if it had been a nice running engine at one time, but this thing has never been right and even if I bore it, put in new pistons, etc. I've still got the work ahead of me to finish getting it dialed in just right. My son leaves for college this fall and I don't want to spend the summer in the garage like I did last year. (Edit to add: this was purchased from the same guy Sparkie Boat bought his troubled J-150 from. It was cobbled together just enough to make it run and sell it - if you want to know who to never buy an engine from in the Savannah, GA area see my thread in the Non-Repair Outboard Discussions).

It's 22 yrs old and if it came from the guy that Sparkie bought his mtr from, it's time to retire it. Who knows what you'll find if you open it up. Just MHO.

I noticed that same guy has an engine for sale on ebay right now. He only has about 60 transactions and it's a different username than before (I recognized his shop in the photo) so he obviously changes usernames after he gets some negative feedback. But what gets me is he's got some absolutely glowing reviews right now - I wonder if he's come back from the dark side.

Yeah, your right. I appreciate that 'cause I absolutely hate giving up on something, makes me feel like I failed. (But I guess in this case my main goal is to get on the water and have some fun with my kids before they move away.)
