I just bought an older duel console boat. It has a 20 inch transom on it right now. As it sits, there is a small 12 gallon gas tank under the splashwell. There is so little space, the batteries won't even fit under it.

I am thinking about raising the transom to 30" and raising the splashwell aswell. Raising it 10 inches will put the top of the transom right at the rubrail height. After further inspection, the floor and transom are rock solid. I hate to replace a transom that doesn't need it.

the other dilema is that I now have 2 good running 20 inch johnson motors. I have a 95 120hp fully rebuilt with less than 50 hours on it, and the motor that came with the boat. A 1980 140hp. The previous owner put almost $1200 dollars in replacement parts in the motor before he figured out that the #1 cyl had thrown a ring.(New prop, new coils, new power packs, fuel pump and carbs rebuilt, new plugs, new starter) A quick ring and piston replacement, cyl hone, and the thing is running like a champ. I have a friend of mine that has an really clean 30" 2000 yamaha 135 2 stroke with 150 hours on it that he's replacing with a 4 stroke. He is willing to give me a hell of a deal on it.

I really need the storage for the batteries and a larger gas tank. Don't wan't to really take up deck space for that stuff if I don't have to. It will also help with keeping water from coming over the transom when backing down on fish. So whats all of your expert opinion on this? do I? don't I? I'm not really looking forward to another transom replacement, but if I must I must.

thank you for the help in advance

That boat is nicer than it looked in the ad. I don't think I knew it was an open bow. I would have been even more for the purchase if I knew that! Nice find.

Your ideas are batsh_t crazy :p I wouldn't go hacking that thing up one bit and it has a fantastic engine on it as it sits. Just reorient the gas tank to make room. (Some interior pictures would help us come up with some ideas).

I have mine like this: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2638.jpg
and it's actually got room for a jump seat in front of it: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/IMG_0463.jpg
then I built this in there and around it for a fishing chair and tons of additional storage http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/IMG_0485.jpg

There was never an in floor tank on that boat? Could you build an enclosure around the tank and mount the batteries to that? Post pics of the interior showing the tank set up and I'm sure you will get more advice than you want or need.

ez, I will get some new pics of the boats up soon. need to get the camera back from the parents.

Yea, I am tickled pink at the condition of the boat. I feel bad for the previous owner. Really nice guy. He spent so much time on that boat and didn't get to use it much. he even fixed up the trailer. new rollers, replaced rusty u bolts, new lights, new tires and spare. I guess he just got frustrated and donated it to charity. Other than a gelcoat that no amount of wet sanding and buffing will bring back, and a few scratches in the window glass, this boat is amazing for a 38 year old boat.

skipper, much to my surprise, there was never a belly tank in this boat, but if I can ever convince the floor to rot, there will be. lol

Re: talk me out of this

well, finally got her to a place I could get some cleaning done and some new pics. Here is a surprise for ya.

This image shows the limited space I have in the rear to put the batteries, but check out the bilge area with the nice spray in foam exposes to the elements. don't get me wrong, this boat has a self bailing deck. sorta. there are two 1" drain holes. One on either side. Don't think thats going to save me if I get a wave over the bow. Time to figure this one out and maybe to get some larger scuppers. lol

I was thinking of puting the batteries under the console's, one on either side on the shelf's.

Not the greatest pic, but you can see the shelf under the console. Whatcha all think?

I'll start a new thread with some new pics showing off the new boat.
