Keep your eyes peeled if you are looking to upgrade your computer inexpensively this Christmas season, one of our local computer stores here is selling 480 gig SSD drives with a 3 year guarantee for $99.95 and it is actually a known brand name with very good reviews, when I picked one up today, I was talking to the owner of the store and he said he got a special buy on them from the factory as they had excess inventory this year and the same deal was offered all over the country! It is a Mushkin 480 gig ECO2 drive and talk about fast, nice little drive for the money.

No doubt MT.......Fast is an understatement!! Mine, when bought was a bit more and 480G is sorta small still.

So when I built this machine, I ran several SSD's (C and D[backup OS to boot to)] ) and a HDD (E). My main SSD (C, the 480G) is mainly for my OS, Acad etc (makes sys backup's easier too).... Like to try to keep the OS's SSD around half full so I'll install most other programs that are especially disk piggie programs that I don't use/need all that much, I'll installed them over on the HDD (E). Booting takes like seconds these days, will never go back eh?.......... Didn't know they had puters over there on that side of the hill? ;)

Sam, I have 11 puters sitting here in the living room and dining room, I just put my servers to bed for the winter and also own 5 internet servers, I actually still do some work for the DOD when required, so yes, we have computers on this side of the hill..

I have seen some pretty good deals on all kinds of hard drives. I picked up a seagate external (not ssd) 2tb mini for $70. My new iphone 6s 64gb was free with the gift card they gave during black Friday. I thought about getting an ssd but the ways I used my computers it wouldn't make much of a difference.

$99 is an awesome price . . . I am wondering if I can get something that would fit my mid-2009 MacBookPro . . . the drive is getting pretty full and I had to dump a bunch of stuff to free up some space. Plus a 6 year old laptop drive is probably on the downside of life expectancy. :noidea:

Yeah, like Bruce said: pretty easy.

I'm gonna' bump mine up after the New Year to a 500GB (or more) SSD. It's just a couple of years newer than yours.

I have SSDs in both my laptop and my desktop. At my company, all of the chassis we sell that have embedded computers use SSDs. I wouldn't own a computer without one.

In my laptop The boot/OS drive is a 256GB SSD, 2nd is a hybrid 500GB and the 3rd one is a standard 500GB ESATA. With the prices coming down as much as they have on the higher capacity drives it might make sense to swap out #2 and 3 at some point. You really notice the SSD at boot time

I was reading some stuff on the mSATA drives last night and I have a slot for that, I may be looking for another one in the next day or two.

Your laptop has 3 bays for HDs?

Not to change the topic, but could a SSD be used on my direct tv genie 34 as an internal or external drive?

Yes, 3 internal drives Dell Precision M4800. The c drive is actually an SSD minicard (mSata) rather than a conventional 2.5 drive.
one 2.5" drive in easy eject drive bay; one 2.5" drive in optical bay caddy6; one solid state Mini-Card Dell Fast Response Free Fall Sensor standard
• Hard Disk Drive: Up to 750GB 7200rpm SATA 6Gb/s
• Hybrid Hard Drive (HHD): Up to 1TB SATA 6Gb/s with up to 16GB of solid state storage; 500GB FIPS certified self encrypting HHD9
• Solid state drive (SSD): from 128GB to 512GB SATA 6Gb/s
• Solid State Mini-Card storage device (mSATA): 128GB to 512GB

Yes but there really is no benefit performance wise especially when you take into consideration how much smaller SSDs are. DVR HDs aren't writing/reading all over the disk space since they are reading/writing sequentially. SSD takes advantage of the fact that there are no moving parts for accessing memory all over the place which is not needed on a DVR. Also DVR bandwidth is pretty darn small even with an HighDef movie.

Thanks bruceb58 just what I needed to know. I was just looking at adding more storage to the DVR and thought SSD might be a better option.

Just use a normal drive. An SSD is for speed. You don't need that for a DVR. They are a lot more expensive for space too.
