Looking at a little outboard to buy called Tanaka 300. Dont know much about this brand so my question would be is there alot of available parts for these motors?? It does have a hole in the gas tank so it will need repairs. Thinking about it as a winter project

Re: Tanaka 2hp

Hi PScrabber. They were sold ounder many different names such as Gamesfisher, Tanaka, and others. You'll hear a wide variety of opinions on these little motors. They're essentially weed eaters witha prop.

Pros: Very Common, Cheap, fairly reliable, air cooled (so no impleller to change or worry about), no neutral or reverse gears so they have very simple gears any one can fix, they're very light weight, and get great gas economy.

Cons: Probably cost more to fix than they're worth (assuming you can find parts), loud (think weed eater), not as smooth as a larger motor, not as sturdy as a larger motor.

I have a 3 hp Gamefisher (Tanaka) and it has served me well over the years. I've taken it in fresh/salt water and every where in between. However, when/if it dies that will prbably be the end of her as new parts are worth more than the motor. If you don't mind a little extra noise and vibration, I say go for it. They're scrappy little motors and fun/easy to work on and would make a fun winter project, but don't be surprised if new parts aren't cheap or easy to come by. If you're lucky you might be able to find a parts motor. Just an opinion.

P.S.
I have the owner's manual so let me know if you wnat me to send you a copy.

Re: Tanaka 2hp

F R thanks for that link yes it might be a 3hp instead of the 2hp that seller listed.
KFA thanks for the breakdown on this motor and your right about parts , there not cheap($50 for carb kit, $40 for gas tank)
Add that with the cost of buying it($75) and already in $165.
I'll think i find another motor for a winter project!

Re: Tanaka 2hp

I've run a Tanaka 3HP on my canoe for 25+ years and it's been a darn good little motor, especially for shallow water use, a bit noisy, not as sophisticated as modern motors, but very simple and easy to work on and maintain, light weight, air cooled, centrifugal clutch. Honda makes a 2HP with very similar features, only it's a 4 stroke, about $1000, and I'll bet is a sweet little motor! Good Luck1
