Hi,
I just have a question on wether or not to keep my tanks full or empty on my outboard? I don't have fuel injection, so therefore I have to premix.I have about a quater of a tank with the right amount of stabil and followed through on the whole winterizing process.I was thinking that in the spring I would fill it than with a new mix of gas and oil.Would this be ok?

Yeah you could do that but I would fill the tank to minimize condensation. I would also put in fresh filters in my in line water seperators in the spring.

During the season when you run the boat a lot I would not necessarily keep the tank full. That is due to weight. My boat has a 122 gal tank. If I am out just day boating where I will burn, say, 25 gal for the day, I will put in 50 gal when I get to the 1/4 tank level. No need to carry 95+ gal of weight around.

Will the remaining treated gas cause me problems in the spring?

As long as you have the right amount of stabil in your gas you should be ok. You also want to run stabil into your engine then fog it up :)

Thanx for your feedback. I've just heard so many different thoughts on this and I was'nt sure which way to go.Ido have the right amount of stabil but I guess I was concerned more with the condensation building in the tanks throughout layup. In the spring I was gonna hook up a portable tank with a fresh fuel mix just to get it going in my driveway, than add new gas right before I get it down to the ramp.by than it will all be mixed up.

Don't worry it is a Heterogenious mixture...

I'm in the camp of NOT leaving gas in the tank over winter storage for these reasons: 1-can't do gas any good to sit there for months and it will not improve as fine wine does. 2- condensation and the chance of getting water in the tank. 3- another reason, kind of in the "nervous Neally" camp, is the issue of on adding fuel to a fire, especially with a rig witha 100 gal tank. 4-In my case, I trailer my rig 550 miles to the lake in the spring so why make the trip with all that weight? I put the TW-3 oil in at home and fill'er up near the lake.

At the end of the season, here's what I do: On my last boating trips of the year I try to run my tank down less that 5 gallons. Then at home in the driveway, I put Stabil in the tank and run the engine on the muffs and disconect the fuel line and run the carbs dry and fog the engine through the carb as it runs out of gas. (I also do all the other winterizing stuff) Then I syphon the gas out of the built in tank into a 5 gal gas tank and store the gas in the can for use next year. I make sure the can is air tight. I then tape the built-in tanks vent with duct tape to minimize air entry.

Then next year I put a 1/2 gal. of the stored gas back in the tank and resyphon it back out into a clear container to see if there is any water or other stuff got into the tank. I think this is a good way to keep crud out the tank.

This may be over kill but I figure better safe than sorry.

StillFishin'
