Hello

The shift cable nut in the bell housing (1988 Alpha One)

Is shoot, it looks like it has been there for a long time.

The "special" socket striped the brass nut, I cut the cable
and so far I drilled a 5/16 hole thru it.

Does anyone know the TAP size for this tread?

Thanks

I use a 1/4 NPT that was shortened by gringing away the larger portion of the threads.

1/4 NPT sounds small for this hole?
Did you use it on a 1988 Alpha One?

Re: tap size for shift cable nut?

Thanks for the help guys

I have 2 posts now with 2 diferent typs of Tap

A 1/4 NPT which is a pipe tap?

and a 1/4-18 NPSF which is a straight tap?

I know Don is always right but why would anyone use a NTP tap?

Listen to Don S.
A taper thread will lock up after a few threads.

I didn't just type that up from memory, it's actually a picture out of the service manual.
Read what it says, it doesn't say anything about an NPT, it calls out specifically a straight thread tap, and in the last paragraph says NEVER use a tapered thread tap. which is NPT.

NPSF = National Pipe Straight Fine as I recall.

Ahh plenty of feedback now.
Don I never doubt your input and yes I know what a PDF file looks like but Bt Doctur posted an NPT tap and that’s a taper tab. I was just trying to get more info out of him.

NPSF and NPT are 2 different taps; out of curiosity I was just wondering how you could use an npt without damaging the bell housing.
