Give me a break that kid is lucky thats all he got..........When a LEO tells you to do something........DO IT! It looked like he was gonna run or pull something out of his pocket and even after he was being arrested he still was resisting arrest............Pathetic that anybody feels he was treated unfairly.

That's not the point MandR. It never should have escalated as far as it did. Most experienced LEO's wouldn't have made that rookie mistake.

Re: Tasered by Utah Highway Patrol

#1 The law is cut and dry. If you dont sign the ticket then he was within his right as an LEO to arrest this guy..........Whether the cop is jerk or not is a non point in this case...... #2 This kid wanted to argue about it...........Thats a judges job not a LEO. And here is a question if someone (LEO) was pointing a tazer gun at you and ordering you to comply and that you were under arrest would you personally still continue to go and do what ever you wanted?

Fact is some cops have an additude..........but most people who they have to arrest have worse ones. They are not public relation representives.......They are there to enforce the law not make friends.........I lived on the other side of the law for 16+ yrs and every time I got into trouble I was at fault not the cops........One thing I know is everytime I have had to deal with the police I have shown respect whether I was wrong or not and I can say I have been treated more then fair every single time.........Now that I have turned over a new leaf I have made a few friends that are also police officers and almost everyone I now know personally are saints for keeping their cool as often as they do.

Re: Tasered by Utah Highway Patrol

It looked to me like that could be very dangerous tazing someone where they could hit the concrete like that and also, his head was very near the white line when he hit the pavement. I think the cop should have done things a little differently and that tazing and mace should be used as a last resort as others stated. Shouldn't he have asked the kid to get on the other side of the vehicle away from traffic and put his hands behind his back and cuff him if he was running his mouth? Seems to me if it was such a serious situation as to merit tazing that he should have already been deserving of an arrest as well. After cuffing him, the smart-aleck kid would probably have been much more polite and eager to cooperate, else go to jail. He could always have just let him out of the cuffs after explaining the "what-for". Some people these days think that noone has any authority over them and that they are too good to listen to a "lowly" cop. They also have the idea that if someone in authority actually forces them to act right, they should receive millions of dollars after suing them. Both the cop and the kid are in the wrong, in my opinion. I think that very few people can handle having authority and wish we could pay cops more to attract the best and have a lot fewer of 'em.

Truth is I make close ( $5000 less per yr)to what a police officer starts at around here giving guitar lessons........... Which job is more importiant and more dangerous...........I mean a broken string can cause some serious injury..........And you have no idea how much my ears have been tortured by some of my students.........I think I need a tazer too :D

After looking at the tape a few times, I feel the officer showed compassion and restraint toward an individual that isn't mature or smart enough to share the road with me or my loved ones. I am glad that idiot driver was taken off the road that day. Sadly, I doubt he has the brains or ability to comprehend just how lucky he is.

This topic is making some interesting forum fodder....

We just about have a mob mentality going with separate groups of folks....

Dang.... I wonder is we could hire our services out as outhouse lawyers!!! :D

Sometime in early Jan 2008 that young man will have his day in traffic court.... need we be reminded that we are ALL innocent until proven guilty!

In Vancouver at the airport we had a tasering incident that a person died. He was from another country and could not speak English. This person was very upset and was throwing stuff around. There's more to the story. Most people are bashing the RCMP for doing it and using force to take him down. In my opinion thay did the correct actions. Think about it what if that person had a bomb or some other kind of mass destructive killing device in his possession. Then the RCMP would be bashed for not doing enough. Think 911

Re: Tasered by Utah Highway Patrol

They can do that and then we have how many?

supposedly, the bad actors are in the minority, right? Or are you trying to say that a significant percentage of LE officers are ill-suited for their positions... ?

I say that if they weed out the bad actors, their profession will be the better for it, and people like me, who aren't criminals, but don't trust cops anyway, well, we will be a lot more comfortable around the officers that are left on the force, and that should make their jobs easier, not harder.

It seems like a sorry state of affairs to say, "yeah, there's a bunch of rotten apples in LE, but we need warm bodies more than we need professionals, so don't criticize the bad ones."

Sorry, but those who are entrusted with the kind of power that cops have need to be well-screened, balanced and composed individuals, not bullies looking for a job that lets them act out with impunity. And if better pay is required, I'm all for it, if it comes with better mechanisms for removing the bad ones.

Accountability should go both ways, not just fall to the idiot who foolishly overreacts to a rude cop.

Re: Tasered by Utah Highway Patrol

ya right now in canada we got a real problem with tasers.

i know i would not want to be a cop and deal with the crap they gotta put up with.
specially when someone tries to get somthing out of thier pocket, cops dont know what it might be.... tough job.

what i dont understand is... in the olden days.. a night stick was the next level of escelation for an officer. now there grabbing tasers.

the guy in vanc airport could have been subdued in many other ways.

i think the cops need more training. attitude training and when to use what weapon. that used to be standard training a long time ago.

cheers

A similar incident happened up the road from where I live last spring. However it wasn't the family dog. It was the father/husband that was killed protecting his family from the 2 am bust. The family insists that he thought it was a break in by thieves and not the LEO's. It really tuned into a mess when they realized that they had the wrong address.

Cops bad, public good. Is that the mantra we all want to believe?

We're sick.

Pay these people a respectable wage. That will weed out the goofs.

We entrust ourselves and children to this society full of weirdos, goofballs and criminals. Yet we take no responsibility for ourelves. My family is my business and they are well behaved. That jerk that fought the law and lost could have/should have learned a few things from his parents. Obviously, he missed the message, if it was given, which I doubt.
It's a fine line between law enforcement and civil disobedience. As a society, we've gone toward the latter.
I have the upmost respect for law enforcement, with one caveat. Law enforcement needs to enforce just laws enacted by representatrives of our government.
As far as tazers go, it's better than a bullet. So, sue away. Another millionaire that earned nothing other than being a complete idiot and jerk.

God help us.

Millions of cops, millions of stops every week in this country, and when one stop goes bad every cop is then lumped into the "Bad Cop" catagory and everyone with a computer can see it, cuss it, discuss it, tell how they would have handled it better.

Maybe the cops ought to post on youtube every GOOD stop they make.

I am sure every traffic stop is a good one...... as long as I am the one driving past and not the one being stopped!! :)

I think you guys are over reacting. Who says all cops are bad because of this incident?? Job performance is critiqued all the time as it should be. Are you saying cops can do no wrong? We should just overlook it because he's underpaid and it's not his fault??
