Tax Rant - Please help me rationalize

I was working on my taxes last night and became increasingly PO'd at our tax code.

When you hear the media go on and on about the rich getting all the tax breaks blah blah blah.. it is a flat out lie. Just for clarification, I am not rich. But apparently my govt thinks I am.

To me it is bad enough that the more money you make, the higher percentage they take. On its face that is not equitable. But for those not aware, not only do they gouge a higher percentage, they also reduce the ability to deduct. This applies even to the most basic deductions.

For instance, the standard deduction for a dependent child is $1000 (I think). However, after a certain amount of income (for married filing jointly I believe the number is ~135K Adjusted Gross) they start whitttling away that deduction for every $100 you are over that amount. This happens with a whole bunch of the standard deductions.

Lets not even get started on the Alternative Minimum Tax. This is a boondoggle. it basically says that OK no matter how many deductions you find, you still need to pay this much tax, essentially creating a false tax floor.

I found that even saving for retirement is a minefield. My advisor recommended last year (said advisor and I will be having a discussion about this) that I start putting money into a Roth IRA so that i do not have all my money in pre-tax devices. Well to my surprise, I make too much to contribute to Roth IRAs and that the govt is penalizing me for every dollar I put in. To the tune of about $300 for a $3200 contribution. Sickening.

Lets talk about consumption. My higher income also means I spend more which in turn generates sales tax. I can tell you they should name a road in my honor with all the gas I have bought over the last year. I am not looking to reduce my burden based on this, but it should go hand in hand that this is extra contribution and should be understood when they start taking my deductions away.

Since I am paying taxes through the nose, it should also be understood that my need for services is also lower. I don't require medicaid or prescription drug coverage, food stamps, or any welfare services. I send my kids to private schools, thus saving the $11,000 (estimate public school cost) per kid education cost ($44,000 as I have four). And the rest of the services I get from the gov't is no greater than anyone else.

I don't expect anyone to feel sorry for me. As my FIL says: " The taxman says everyone would like your problem". However, I want to know why this is fair.

Help me rationalize that I am being treated fairly by my govt and not as the victim of the politically correct politicians.

AArgh.

It doesn't pay to be a middle class American anymore. The middle class is burdened with compensating for tax loopholes for the rich and paying for social programs for the poor. That's thanks to our two party system. One side is working for the rich and one side is working for the poor. Who's working for the middle?

It is not fair, Roger. It was never intended to be fair.

SIX percent of US taxpayers pay 90% of the personal income taxes collected. Hillary wants them to pay all of it.

I can't even thank "the rich" for my Social Security benefits, Medicare or prescription drug benefits, because 98% of those taxes are paid by the "middle" class taxpayer (what I was before retirement). So, I thank you for that. :)

Isn't that why the tea was thrown into Boston harbor is for fair taxation? OK, so the official beef was taxation without representation. But one could argue I am not being fairly represented, as much of the tax change is diluted to not PO lower income constituents.

I don't mind paying my share, it just that the "tricks" embeded in the complexity of the tax rules end up increasing the tax rate, while making possible to show the the tax table as being somewhat reasonable.

Its straightforward to show a table that links income thresholds to a taxable rate. The rules embedded actually increase the effective rate on the high end because of the unfair access to deductions, while lowering the rate for the lower end due to special "low income eligible" deductions.

I'm not a tax expert, but I believe the top tax rate in this country is something like 33 % (Federal)

There are lots and lots of potential tax breaks, and tax shelters for the affluent that in a moderate income bracket 250k to < 1 mill if you are not getting your effective rate (tax liability div by Total gross income) to around 15% or so, you need a better tax attorney or better tax strategies.

Back in college, a good friend was Edgar Kaiser's grandson, and we spent lots of time on the Kaiser compound on Orcas Island, Wa. He used to say his grandfather had 4 tax attorneys on staff- 2 corporate and 2 personal. I have no idea what tax he paid, but I bet those attorneys earned what they were paid.

Here in Sault, Mi. we have a municipal recreational airport right in the city limits of the Sault, paid for by my tax dollars. I have no idea how many acres it is, or what the fair market value of that property is, but in the peak of the flying season, there can't be more than a couple dozen take offs and landings per day, with an occasional corporate jet. I'd be willing to bet not one of the users of that airport are on the welfare rolls.

Noone likes paying taxes, and everyone wants the services those taxes provide. Imagine that.

I'm going to have a hard time shedding much a tear for you, I'm afraid.

Be glad that you live in a country that offers the opportunity that this one does.

PW2,

Are you saying there are no fees for the use of that Airport? I have no idea, but I'd assume there are landing, or hangar, or fuel taxes that go there . . . No? I guess another way to put it is that in CA I pay property taxes, registration and launch fees for my boat, nothing similar for planes?

I feel your pain, Roger.. I think just about every American ( 'cept for PW who defends it) feels violated without lubricant around this time of year. Push for the fair tax.
For the record, I am far from "rich", even by hillary or pelosi's yardstick.
I am still crunching the numbers because so far, my check to the fed will kick-out any possibility to fund Carol's MGB surgery.
That will not stand! I'll shaft them before that happens.

sorry PW, try being a small buisness owner. I work nearly 50 or 60 hours a week. My W2's said I made over 500K, but I think I saw, about 200K. over $300,000 was paid in taxes on the hours and work that I did. I also employ about fifteen other people, and pay a portion of their taxes. AND I AM ONLY HALF OWNER. That means between my partner and I, from our little operation, we paid over $600,000.

We put our butt on the line everyday, risk capital, and employ others, and the libs think I'm rich. All I can say is BULLSHI!.

I am gonna quit and go on welfare., I'd probably make more money.

Gee I wonder why I'm conservative.

I love being an American.

Whether they are richer or poorer, everybody else is always better off than ME!:$

Taxes are never fair or equitable and will probably never be. It our job to use all of the tax laws as best as we can.

How about for the people who've made a mistake in their life, paid their debt to society, are once again a productive citizen of society paying taxes, work, buying products, living the good life, but still don't have the right to vote?

I was always told that paying taxes is the cost of voting. Ok then. No vote, I won't pay taxes. Why should I? If we all got together we would overwhelm the jail system with non-tax paying citizens. But heck, this country can't unite against a common enemy, what says they'll unite against their own government?

I have no idea whether there are fees or not, as I don't use it.

There has to be probably at least 100 building lots on it, and at $30 k per that's $3 mill just for the property. Add to that the value of the buildings and maint (snow blowing) no way that would generate enough revenue to pay it's costs. A take off or landing fee would cost more than the plane!

Mind you, I don't care that the airport exists--I'm sure there are a few docs and execs that use it--it's just when I hear about folks paying all these taxes and not getting anything for it, I have to laugh!

If what you say is accurate, Spud, I'd get a new tax advisor in a hurry.

There are a ton of tax advantages avail to the small business owner that are not avail to the simple wage earner. If you are not taking advantage of them, I don't know what to say.

However, I suspect you are like the other conservatives that like to whine and complain about everyone else, with little substance behind it.

The tax code is working great for me. I utilize every deduction I can and pay a very low tax rate. I feel that I get plenty back for the small amount that I pay. Sorry to spoil the pity party.

Under the Clinton administration, “rich” was variously defined as low as anyone making the salary of a first-year public school teacher and above. At times it was a very low threshold. So whenever you saw Billy Jeff or other Democrats (aka communists, same thing) on the tube talking about “taxing the rich” he/they were often inferring a tax on pretty much everyone except the near-poor and below. He/they were actually more ‘fair’(?) about spreading around the taxing; it’s just that he/they were so damn deceptive about it. But then that is the communist’s modus operandi.

I hate to admit it, but I think I 'm with Frogger . . . I remember a couple of years ago asking my tax man "are you sure?" because I got a really good refund and I claim the max # of dependents for withholding. I guess that's what we get with inflated California home prices and the interest deduction to go with it . . .
