TCW-3 Outboard Oil, Best Value

I haven't purchased any oil for my outboards lately, and was just wondering what is the best value today. I have two Evinrudes, a 25 HP, and a 9.9 HP used primarly for fishing at low speed. I like to stock up on oil when the price is right, so I don't buy often. I have always used the regular OMC Brand. Now I see all the Blends and Synthetics etc, and of course Wally World for $6.62 Gal. What does everyone think? I know there must be some opinions. My 25 HP is a 1988, while my 9.9 HP is a 1983.

"I know there must be some opinions."<br /><br />Are you in the habit of trying to sip from a fire hose, artherm?<br /><br />Best value in TC-W3 is WalMart Super Tech.<br /><br />You will now get about a hundred other opinions and a spirited fight.

Good quality, decent value, Its what I would use if I wanted to save a buck. I dont believe in using the cheapest oil I can find. IMHO

Any TC-W3 will work At 50:1. Super tec from wal mart is the chepest, For a few dollars more you can get a synthetic blend. If you want you can spend as much as $25.00 a gal at a dealership. It is really what you think is best or want to spend. Since you have a concern about good oil I would recommend to you the penzoil blend at $10.00 a gallon. Tim

Is it possible some oils are less prone to the dreaded 2-stroke smoke?

Outboard oils with large amounts of PIB additive smoke less than regular oils. Some of these are Johnson-Evinrude XD-50, Merc Premium Plus, Yamaha 2M, and Pennzoil synthetic BLEND. These are listed in the order of least smoke (XD-50) to more smoke compared to regular TC-W3 oils.

I hope it is OK to make an additional comment; I am a long time boater, and at one time OMC Dealers would not warranty any new engine for repairs if they determined that OMC oil as not used in the engine. They claimed OMC oils contained a dye that was evident internally in the engine if it was used. They also, in my area, pretty much condemned any TC-W oil if it was not OMC Brand. This has always stuck in my mind, and I have only used their oil since, but now I am not sure.

this is exactly the type of BS that would cause me to avoid their product like the plague. I have no doubt it's good oil, but I have no faith that dealers selling their own brand oil is nothing but nothing but overpricing for the same quality as other quality oils. By the way, isn't it illegal to require (as opposed to recommend) a specific brand (not type) of oil for warranty unless they actually provide that oil?

The question was, "What is the best value?".<br /><br />Artherm, your experience with some OMC dealer is not universal, nor do you clarify what "at one time" was. Whoever "they" were, they lied. <br /><br />OMC, along with other makers, set the specs for TC-W oils and agreed that any oil meeting those specs was safe to use in their engines at that time and would not void warranty.<br /><br />Several makers, including Brunswick and OMC, set different requirements for their DFI engines, but cannot, by law, require that you use their brand only.

The best value on TCW-3 oil, in the Houston Tx area, is the Bass Pro Outdoor Shop, they run a sale on Citgo oil ( TCW-3 rated ) 2 -3 times a year, at 4.95 a gallon, with a 2 case max.

Walmart's oil works great on the outboards you describe. I use it on my two 15 hp motors. (A Johnny and an Evinrude).<br /><br />Synthetics are pricey, but hardly smoke at all.

Re: TCW-3 Outboard Oil, Best Value

I just wanted to THANK everyone for their comments and opinions. I have always found it interesting to research things like this. If you are interested, go to www.nmma.org, 2005 TCW3 Certified Oils, if you want to get an education. NMMA has certified (193)oils this year. Enough said.My choice for me is down to either the BRP Evinrude/Johnson XD25/30 VS the Penn Synth. Blend. A BRP dealer here sells the XD25 for $12.10/gal in bulk, the Penn Synth. seems to sell for less than $10.00. BRP advertises that the XD25 has 25-30% more additives that the average TCW3 oil, while I have no way to compare this to a Synth. Blended oil. I do find this interesting.Any comments? Thanks

Re: TCW-3 Outboard Oil, Best Value

I just wanted to let everyone know that is interested that I decided to stay with the OEM BRP XD25/30 oil for my 4hp, 9.9 and 25 hp. Rudes. I have been boating forty years, our first 50's engines were I believe 24:1 ration, 1 qt. oil to 5 gals. gas. Mfg.'s weren't real particular about oil, if two cycle wasn't available I believe an automobile 30W. oil was acceptable. It is surprising how times, and engines have changed. The label on the XD25 jug reads:<br /><br />Boating Style XD25 XD50 XD100<br /><br />Fishing- X X<br />Leisure- X X X<br />Tournament&<br />Hi-Performance- X X<br />Offshore&Cruising X X<br />Water Sports- X X<br /><br />Thanks again for everyones input......

I use the Pennzoil Marine the stuff people here also suggest for $10 a gallon. <br /> I think the Walmart oil would be okay too. I just cant bring myself to do it. <br /> The walmart oil is the same as one of the leeding manufactures. They buy by contract and put their name on it.<br /> I just happen to pick Pennzoil and used in my motor since it was new. I dont like to mix. I dont know if it matters though.

I choose the Penzoil Synthetic blend over the Walmart Supertech for a silly reason. I like the handle on the Penzoil better. It seems that I spill less.
