Why dread the smoke? Personally I love the smell of a 2-stroke in the morning; smells like victory... ;)

For what it's worth, I believe the TCW3 spec, required for certification, is that all can be mixed with each other without any ill effects. I premix for both of my outboards using built in tanks (which seldom run completely dry), I use various brands of oil - but generally Castrol or OEM (johnnyrude and quicksilver) I don't routinely mix brands, but don't give it a second thought when I run out of one and begin to use another.

artherm:
At the top of the page is a RED SEARCH button do your research there. You can read for days about OIL WARS.
All I got to say is if you are running a 1960 something $ 300 outboard just get the Wally word stuff what’s it mater? If you are running a newer $8,000 outboard I.M.O Get the good stuff it ant any better but it will make you fell better. I use Pennzoil the 100% synthetic stuff it cost more but it makes me fell that I am protecting my Yammy.

I like the handle on the Penzoil better
There you have it: "Value" is in the eye of the beholder.

For me "value" means any reputable brand of oil that has the TC-W3 rating at the lowest price. And I haven't found one that my outboards don't like yet.

Please elaborate.
Isn't ANY TC-W3 NMMA rated oil suitable for use in our outboards? Do off-brands require some scrutiny on our part?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Dave

Dave, yes any TC-W3 rated oil is suitable.

The "value" of that oil is strictly up to you. Some folks place "value" on price. Others on smoke, smell, oil consumption, peace-of-mind, or even the type of handle on the jug.

I said any reputable brand because to me there is "value" in using a TC-W3 oil that I am familiar with as having an excellent history and reputation. Other folks might not hold "value" in that. I might find myself getting a better "value" by passing up a less expensive TC-W3 if I have never heard of it before.

Here comes that darn "Bunny" again. I thing peace of mind is the secret, I have used many different oils over the years and I now and have been for several years been using the Penzoil Premium Syn Blend. For $10, it is hard to beat and you know you are using a quality "OIL".

I'm sure glad to know about that Walmart oil. No more Quicksilver, Texaco, Penzoil, etc, ad infinitum.

The only thing that works for an old owner is his boat.
