TD-20 Questions

Hello, I just picked up a TD-20 for $41 off a guy next door. I put gas in it and it fired on the third pull. I plan on getting a manual but I'd like to run it a bit this weekend. I noticed the lower unit only has one plug labled "grease". There doesn't seem to be a vent plug. Does this take gearlube or grease? If grease, how do you get the old stuff out, and the new stuff in? Also, I wanted to replace the impeller but NAPA and Sierra don't have a listing for one. Do any other impellers fit this model? Thanks in advance!

Well I don't know that engine but I don't think<br />it takes grease I"m sure it take 80-90w.<br />look on the botom of thr lower unit behind the skeg<br />you should see a drain plug.<br />and there should be a fill plug just below the cavataion plate.<br />as for the water pump have you tried I boats?<br />good luck

The waterpump on your TD is a little different from one on a modern outboard. I've got a couple places for pump parks bookmarked:<br /> Marx<br /> Laing's Vintage Outboard Parts<br /> <br />Since it doesn't work like a regular impeller, the rules don't apply to it so much. Hope this helps!

Hi CC,<br /> Your motor DOES take grease. Use Lubriplate #105. It's for non-gearshift motors such as yours. I find it easier to simply pull the rear carrier and propshaft out of the gearfoot, check the gasket, and repack the housing with grease before reassembly. You'll have to get into that area anyway to check the wobbler pump. Those pumps are quite reliable, and unless it doesn't pump water, you're probably good to go...<br /> There are lots of posts on this site regarding the TD-20s and their brethern (the TN-series). They're one of the better motors ever designed by Johnson, as evidenced by their surviving numbers even now, almost 60 years after the fact...<br /><br />- Scott
