Teak Accents

My "as long as it's mechanically sound, it don't have to be pretty" attitute toward my boat is starting to come to an end. I'm looking to make cosmetic upgrades to my 84 Cheetah. Does anyone know where I can find teak accents (hand rails etc) or is this something I'll have to cut and make myself?

Re: Teak Accents

depending on the length you need, you can find them pretty easily through most marine retail stores. I searched iboats but didn't carry them, west marine carries stock lengths which may or may not fit your needs http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...toreNum=10112&subdeptNum=11366&classNum=11388
The option of making them is pretty simple providing you have a band saw (or jig saw), router with a round over bit and some sandpaper. I've always made my own, but by the time you figure in time and materials it's much cheaper to buy pre-made ones *providing stock sizes work for your project.

Thanks for the help and new ideas. I think I'm going to make them myself.

West Marine was 5x more expensive than my local hardwoods lumber yard. E-bay has some good deals as well.

Re: Teak Accents

if your lumber yard carries teak, that's pretty good. Teak averages $32/BF; a single BF would not even give you enough lumber to build (2) single loop handholds. WM carries singles for $13. But the big factor is time spent making them. Start to finish you're going to have at least an hour for a single loop and at a shop rate plus materials that would theoretically cost around $90 per handhold. Even a 6 loop through WM only costs $68. The cost of the lumber for something that size would be 75% of that. Unless it's a custom profile or odd size/length, there is no doubt in my mind that it's cheaper to buy pre-built. BUT, like I mentioned in my previous post, stock sizes do not always fit what you need.
