Teak refinish and Cetol Questions

So I am coming close to finishing my brightwork around the cockpit. I did the back sides of all the teak, reinstalled, plugged the screws, and have already put down two coats of cetol Natural all around, and one coat of Cetol Gloss on the port side. I plan to head to the boat each day until it's finished.

My concern/question is in regards to the weather. The forcast originally said sun until the end of the week, but now I see chance of rain, and rain showers for the next day or two. I am hoping, although it has not been 24 hours, that the coat I put on yesterday is dry enough to get rained on.

What is the deal with Cetol and rain? If I apply the product, and it rains a few hours later, what could happen? What about the dew we had this morning?

The stuff appears to set, and the tack seems to go away when its out in the sun very quick, but I'm unsure if I will have moisture within the teak, that will wreak havoc on the finish. My whole purpose for removing it and refinishing that way, was to be sure that it is sealed all around, and the finish will last years. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it. I may call Cetol today and get their advice/opinion.

BTW the cockpit canvas really cant go up, due to it resting against the wood rails, and fear of ruining the rails/canvas. Not to mention it is never 100% water tight even with the canvas up.

Re: Teak refinish and Cetol Questions

everything should be fine. What you need to be careful of is coating over damp wood and trapping the moisture. Sikkens dries tack free in a matter of hours (although I believe they recommend not to overcoat for 24). For re-coating follow their directions; even though it feels set after a few hours wait until the next day (otherwise the finish will fail pre-maturely). When the rain stops, let it sit in the sun for a day to thoroughly dry and you should be fine to resume your work. If you happen to get a sprinkle shortly after coating, as long as the coat felt dry, carefully wipe it dry and let it sit in the sun for a day before the next coat.

Hope this puts your mind at ease!

Re: Teak refinish and Cetol Questions

Thanks for the response. I coated the boat Tuesday night around 5:00. I was able to put all the canvas up without touching the wood (I thought it did, but it cleared) so I got the boat mainly water tight. It rained yesterday, quite a bit, but by that point I have to imagine the cetol was dry.

I will be back tonight to add another coat.

I have been following the steps exactly as Cetol states. 24 hours between coats, only 2 color coats, but 4-5 gloss coats. The gloss coats on the rails I will sand between the last two, to try and get it nice and smooth. Also did my flag pole, and doing the swim platform steps. Might put some non skid tape on the treads though, don't want anyone getting hurt.

I think that's a good idea on the platform; coated surfaces do get slick when wet! Sounds like everything is under control; hopefully the weather breaks for you sooner rather than later! Good luck
