Re: Teak wood swim plateform restore help

I think im going to try just sanding, cleaning, and teak oil. If im not happy with the results I may try the spar varnish or something but you are correct kahuna123 the varnish will need a very good uv protectant or it wont last long in Texas.

What grit sandpaper should I use on teak?

BTW that speargun looks great. It reminds me of a finish I have seen before on a beautiful wooden canoe.

I will take pictures and post them with the results. My first picture above was after I used a cheap home wood cleaner on it a few times. It looked ashy like the left side of 83mulligan's teak before I started.

I really appreciate the info so far. Thanks guys.

I just did a bunch of really bad teak trim on my boat. Start with 60 grit sand paper and when wood SMELLS like teak and looks like teak, hit it with polyurethane. After 2 coats, lightly sand with 220 to remove the hairs and put 2 more coats on. For it to not be slippery, use a satin finish. Light sanding every year and a coat will keep it looking great for years.

I was very careful not to get any on my transom. I did get a few drips on the concrete. In the future I will treat teak oil more like paint and use a drop cloth or something.
