I am wanting to put some teak wood in some areas in my boat. Are there any special places to buy this wood? I have never seen it at Home Depot, or at Lowes(never looked close) but just thought if anyone of a place it can be ordered. I live in ATL. GA. Thanks in advance!

Re: Teak Wood

I lucked out at the home centre (Kent) a few weeks ago and got a half-sheet of meranti plywood that had a teak face. I guess a teak log somehow ended up in the plywood plant. I've got to go back and snoop around a bit more.<br />Price paid up here is around $40 a board-foot (planed) at the home centres. Specialty lumber dealers actually sell it for less so don't forget to check with them.

If you are open to the idea, don’t overlook the synthetic teak products. They aren’t exactly cheap, but nowhere near the price of the real thing. Before installing teak, I’d suggest familiarize yourself with the proper washing and up-keep of that wood. Note: teak is washed, not sanded. The synthetic teak is virtually care-free. Some of it looks surprisingly real.

Hi Shane, if you are doing the inside of the boat, I have found that cedar looks almost like teak and is easy to work, it is light weight, and the color is very close.... not good on the outside tho..........

I have a small boat that has a lot of Redwood in it. Very nice wood for a boat, it is soft though.

Re: Teak Wood

I re-finished my teak on my Slickcraft two seasons ago. I don't have a lot of teak but a considerable amount. All the same it was a lot of work. In looking at all the oils available I considered the maintainance that was needed. Just for kicks went with a different oil not actually on the long list of teak care products. The name of this stuff was Watco Oil. You can pick it up at most large building supply shops. It is applied with a rag like most oils. It has a varnish in the oil and every time a coat is applied it seals the wood with a thin coat of varnish when the oils penetrates. As most know teak will flake varnish due to the oils in the wood, however this product has kept my teak in excellant condition not darkening and keeping the reddish blonde look with much less attention. I have only had to put a coat on in the spring each season and it last though out the year.

Re: Teak Wood

The spot that I want this for is for in the back of my boat. It is above the back of the seats and over the motor cover. It will have a hinge attached, so it can be tilted back when I need to open the motor cover. It will take some foot traffic. I just want something nice to look at other than a piece of wood covered in vinyl. I like wood much better. Thanks for everyone's help/ideas. Hopefully I kind find something strong, but nice looking soon! Peace!
