well i'm pulling my 1977 140 johnson apart long story short it has a broken ring in the port side top cylinder...and it looks like the previous owner removed the piece of the ring because there was silicone around the bypass/inspection cover....is it possible to remove the main bearring/crank case cover off with the power head still on the motor ?? it acts like it is stuck on the dial pins maybe they have to be driven out ?? also the bottom of the hood/cowling is still on the motor will i have to remove it also ?? thanks for any help

Yep. You're gonna have to remove the powerhead to work on it. Not an overly difficult task but you'll definitely need a manual to work on it

Re: tearing a 140 down

You have to remove the two sectional covers under the lower cowl to get to the long bolts that hold the engine from below. I have done this a few times, and I would not even consider doing it without the factory service manual.

In the end, the savings in broken parts and time will pay for the manual before you even get the powerhead removed. At a minimum you need a gasket set and new rod bolts, plus all the obvious things like anaerobic sealant.

Be sure to renovate your thermostats while you have everything down.

Yep, you need to remove the powerhead. It's not a big job, really, as long as everything cooperates.
