Techs are stuck...Cannot get to WOT on a 1995 225 XRI

Hi guys,
I am the new owner of a 1995 225 XRi Fuel injected Black Max. Seems to idle OK but I cannot get more than 4900 RPM at WOT. I am running a 23 pitch Hi-Five and originally thought I was overpropped. I demo'd a 21 Hi-Five and my WOT did not change one bit. I have it in for service and they have checked compression-OK, checked spark-OK replaced with new Irridium plugs, gapped to .035". Changed fuel filter and adjusted throttle linkage. They say that nothing is showing up. WOT is suposed to be 5400-5800 for this engine. The engine does not fluctuate at WOT. They are telling me to wait until something fails. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Something is wrong here....

If nothing else change and all you did was drop the pitch by 2" you should have gained at least 200-300 RPMs, should be more like 300-400

my 1994 200 wouldnt go past 4400 rpm once cause the throttle arm was too tight and the timmer base would rub against the inside of the stator.

ive also seen motors have a high speed miss from faulty ignition components.

maybe you are having fuel starvation at high speed?

just some thoughts.

that sounds like typical shop talk when they cant figure out a problem.....why fix it? let something blow apart ten we will charge big money and youll have to pay.... sorry guys!!! but i have more faith in you all then some ol anybody out there... im sure you dont say that in your shops!! 8) what about a linc and sync? has anyone checked that on of the throttle plates is open all the way while the other ones arent?

I know that is the strange thing. I have essentially geared the engine lower thus I should be able to rev higher. I am thinking it is not a lack of power but rather something limiting the revs??

It doesn't seem to miss and if it was fuel starvation would it not surge?

I think the key is "new owner of a 1995....."

What is the engine mounted on? Who set it up? Need a photo of the set up. Are you sure the timing is set right? Are all the throttle components moving to the maximum?

I just last night finished a test on my 115 on my boat. Mounted in the middle hole I got 5100 rpms (3 of 5) so I lifted the motor up as high as I could into the 1st hole and wow I went to 5500 rpms (but lost the ability to turn left from the torque) I moved it again (getting good at this using a forklift at work) and lowered it just one hole.

I was able to steer both left and right once again, rpms went to 5200 - 5250.

All these tests were with the same prop.

Just food for thought.

Baja,
Maybe your tach is just wrong? One way to check is replace it, borrow one and see if it's different, and last but not least go to Mercury Marine Prop selector and input your data and see what top speed your boat is suppose to get and compare to what your really getting. Another thought I have and I'm not sure what your motor has but On the 200 hp model (I don't know about the 225) Mercury put a Low Speed/ High Speed Spark conytrol module that would kick in at 5000 rpm and advance your timing 6 deg. If you have one and it doesn't work it might cause this? Another possibility is the timing advance module that works when you shift your motor in gear it advances your timing 3 deg. If this is broke your timing would be retarded 3 deg at WOT. I would follow Bob VT suggestion and check the timing. Might also get a manual and see what modules you have or ask your mechanic if he checked them.

Thanks Slepinin,

The tech checked the RPM and he came up with a reading slightly slower than what mine is reading. I went to the marine prop selector before, but only because I thought I was overpropped, I will take another look at it. The latest is they changed the fuel filter, did a slight adjustment on the linkage and say they are now getting 5200 RPM. But they say they are getting erratic fault codes on the ECM. They hazzard to guess that it is either the ignition ECM or the fuel injection ECM. They are not sure though. I may demo another 21 pitch prop just to ensure that the problem hasn't been solved and am now overpropped so that I cannot get over 5200 RPM. I will try some of the other suggestions as well.

Thanks Bob,

Wouldn't the RPM increase when I went to a 21 pitch from a 23? regardless of motor position and nothing else changing?

Tell your techs to put it on the dyno and see if it's building 225 horsepower. If it is then the setup is wrong for the boat, prop, engine height.... If not, find the prob with the engine. You got the cart way out in front of the horse. You got to determine first if it's engine probs or not.

No. Other way around. If you drop pitch (i.e., 23 to 21) you GAIN rpm.
