I bought this motor and it says air cooled at the top of the motor does this mean you can run the motor without having it in the water? I found the sears site that gives the schematics of the motor and I do not see any impeller in the lower unit. Here is the website link.

the website does show a water tube in the lower unit going to the top. Kinda weird motor to me. Pull one time and it starts. Sounds good to me. Do I have a keeper? thanks for any help.

Any motor that starts on the first pull, is a keeper. If it has a little water tube going to the top, then it's good to put it in water to run it. The water tube picks up water by force from movement or by the prop to send it up to the top. In these air cooled models, the water cooling is there for the exhaust housing and to keep the heat from burning up the paint, or discoloring it. No water goes around the cylinder for cooling in those. These are actually good little motors and simple to work on. They're made by Eska Corp. and have been sold by many different brands for many years. Ted Williams is just one of the many brands. Tune up kits are easier to get at the local lawn mower shop, since they are a Tecumse' powerhead. The best thing to do, if you ever have to tune it up, is just take the points and condensor off and go to the local lawn and garden shop and have them match them up to a new set.

That model has a water tube, but no water pump. The prop and forward movement through the water pushes water up that tube into the midsection where it comes out and cools the exhaust tube and surrounding parts. The engine is air-cooled. You can run it for a very short time out of water, but without the water the exhaust area will get very hot and could harm the engine.

It's a simple system of cooling. If your little outboard is running, then it should keep running for quite a while. Sounds like a keeper to me.

thanks for your help. i drained the lower unit today and nothing came out, I put on its side to try to get something, nothing. No water, no oil, nothing. I filled with gear lube. Any thoughts on this? Thought strange. Any ideas on the oil fuel mix for this motor? thanks for your help guys.

Does that one have just one plug in the lower unit. If so, it may use grease, instead of oil. If that's the case nothing would have drained out. Lubriplate 105 grease would be the one to use. If the lower unit oil you put in there leaks out, then I'd try the grease. I think you can get it in a squeeze tube.

It had a vent and fill plug. Its a 1975 3 hp ted williams motor air cooled. I didnt know what was going on, with no lube coming out. I filled with 90w oil is that a bad thing?

I would check it after the initial use to make sure it's staying in and no water is getting in. If water is getting in, then I would flush it out real good and do what CATransplant suggested for lube. I've done this for a lot of these direct drive motors and it works great.
