I am not much of a mechanic, so please pardon my lack of what might be the most basic knowledge. I am trying to get a Ted Williams 7.5 outboard that has been sitting for a couple years (I was told) to work. It looks in pretty good condition, minimal rust, no corrosion. However, I can't even get past trying to pull the starter cord. When I pull on the cord, only about 4 inches worth pulls out. So I began to work my way into it to try and find the problem. I read that a stuck cord usually means that the cylinder is rusted over, but when I took the cover and pull/coil mechanism off I found out the flywheel actually turns counterclockwise, but not clockwise. And if I put my finger in the sparkplug hole while I turn it, I can feel the vacuum. So, the starter cord pulls the flywheel in a clockwise direction(but it won't budge), but I can easily turn it counterclockwise and feel the engine turn. Does anyone know which way the flywheel is supposed to turn? Could it be that the pull mechanism for the starter cord was just set to pull in the wrong direction.

I feel like a kid again going to start a lawn mower and not being able to get past the very first step.
Any ideas, comments or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Amigo

You should be able to turn it backwards far enough to get a compression stroke.I have a feeling it may get stuck. As far as intake and
compression a 2 stroke doesn't care which way you turn it.
A 2 stroke will run either way with minor ignition changes.Timing advance would be opposite.
In the 60s Merc built a 70 and 80 hp motor with no transmission. Forward it ran in clockwuse rotation neutral motor off reverse would start and run in opposite rotation. They were nicknamed dock busters.

If you are looking down at the top of it it should turn clockwise. There may be a problem the the pull start on it. Take it off and see if you can turn the flywheel clockwise (remove the spark plug to make it easy). If it still wont turn spray some WD-40 in the spark plug hole and work the flywheel anyway it will turn. Be careful where your spark plug wire sits as it may cause an arc and ignite the fumes from the wd-40 (bad experience). Once the flywheel turns free in both directions flush the cylinder with fuel/outboard motor mix to lube it up good, or you can just spin the flywheel and allow the engine to suck some good clean fuel in through the carb. Hook your pull start back on to the top and give it a rip. I have owned a few of the Sears Ted Williams 7.5 hp's. They can be a riot. Easy to fix if you can find parts. Dont get too far from shore with it though, they arent the most dependable. Good luck. Let us know what you find out.
