Ted Williams 7.5 HP questions(s)

Hello Everyone and thank you for reading my post.

I bought myself a Ted Williams 7.5 HP single cylinder, 2-cycle outboard motor with air cool Tehcumseh engine. It only has forward and neutral, no reverse.

It was pretty dirty, paint flaking off, rusted screws/bolts, and I could go on.

However, having cleaned everything and putting fresh gas in there, 1:32 mix with some marine Stahbil, I was able to start it. Boy is this thing LOUD.

It's got some issues and I have questions.

* To get to the carburetor on this things, it seems you're required to take the power head apart. Seriously, I wanted to just give it a good spray down and clean it out but there is absolutely no way of doing that without removing some stuff off the power head. Is that correct?

* The propeller is held on with a 'plastic' cap nut. I had to make sure I was seeing it right but yeah, it's plastic. Is that OEM?

* When the motor is out of the water, I had no problem going from neutral to forward. But after I put it in a barrel of water, forward gear sometimes does not want to engage. I have to make several attempts. It's sort of odd. Anyone have suggestions or ideas what could be causing this?

I have a leaking quick connect/disconnect and the leak is apparently bad enough to cause the motor to stall unless I squeeze the balb when I hear it starting to stall.

* Any suggestions on getting this motor running tip-top or close to tip-top would be appreciated.

I found a youtube video of the motor that looks like mine: Ted Williams - Eska 7.5 HP - YouTube and here's another one, LOT #567 - TED WILLIAMS 7.5 HP BOAT MOTOR - WORKS.

I don't have any of my own yet but will take some when I get a chance.

Get you model#, and plug it in here to get 'sploded views and part numbers;

Get parts from here;

Or call these guys with part numbers;

The nylon prop nut and washer are factory stuff. Leaky fittings will kill fuel flow, and those are Chrysler fittings. There's a two bolt oval plate halfway down the port side of the leg that covers the shift linkage adjustment joint. get the foot into neutral, loosen the joint bolt, do NOT take it out, and set the lever in the neutral position, torque the joint bolt and test. It may need you to turn the motor or prop over to drop in gear when it's not running. Don't be fooled by the fins on the top end, that thing has a water pump, and the engine's bottom end needs it. I've never had to do anything to the powerhead to extract the carb. You also have a solid state ignition, and if you turn the motor over without the plug/wire grouded you will burn it down. You really don't want any of that. The biggest expertise pool for these motors is here;

There's a nylon washer?

I think it's gone because I didn't see on there.

I need to get the model number to get the diagram, as suggested.

Oh yeah, in regards to joining the Eska outboard group, I'm still waiting for confirmation. I requested to join a couple of days ago.

Hi MahtyMaht,

Regarding this; "There's a two bolt oval plate halfway down the port side of the leg that covers the shift linkage adjustment joint. get the foot into neutral, loosen the joint bolt, do NOT take it out, and set the lever in the neutral position, torque the joint bolt and test."

Do you have a diagram of where the shift linkage located? I'm not sure I understood it correctly. It sounds to me like it's in the mid-section of the motor between the lower unit and the power head.

I think I understand what you're saying now, after reading your other posts.

So on the port side of the motor, between the power head and lower unit, there should be an oval shaped plate. It covers the shift linkage. I have to remove this plate to get to the linkage, which is actually inside the motor leg.

I don't recall seeing an oval shaped plate on the motor leg. I'll have to check again.

Re: Ted Williams 7.5 HP questions(s)

I just checked the motor for the said oval plate and did not find one on either side of the motor.

I did manage to get the model and serial number.

Model 217-5889-0
Serial 3C 1759009

I will check the Sears site for a diagram.

Last update.

I took the motor out to the lake this weekend. The motor ran great. Wish that was the end of my story but there's more. I got it to engage forward gear once. That's it. And then afterwards I could not get it into forward again.

Let's put it this way, I got my exercise for the day with the paddles. Luckily I wasn't too far away from the dock. It took about 20 minutes of paddling against a light breeze.

Where the heck are you boating where it was freezing, the arctic? :lol: I also requested to join the Eska group on Yahoo but have not been accepted. Honestly if it wasn't for MahtyMaht I'd be lost.

Last-last reply. I fixed the leaking quick connect with a new o-ring. I believe it was the #8 size o-ring from Home Depot. I tapped the quick connect in place after I replace the o-ring and left it sitting over over night. The next day, it compressed enough where I could easily connect and disconnect.

Hope I can get some help on the issue with the clutch dog on a new thread.

You won't have an oval plate if you have a clutch, because with a clutch, there is no shift linkage. I think one of you guys has a clutch, and the other has a shifter, and I'm fat'n'old and getting crossed up. Your really supposed to have separate threads to avoid this sort of thing, but what the hey. Take another crack at the eska group, I don't know what happened there, but I'll look for ya. I only know what I've read about the clutch ones, never actually seen one of the durned thangs.

Hi Brim,

That would be great and I will take you up on your offer. If you have it available on some share drive, can you send me a link?

Thank you.
