I have a game fisher 9.9 and have checked the impeller and it is in ok condition. It seams to **** ok while in a barrel when idling. I took it to the river works ok until it is put into gear and start to travel. At this point the tell tail stops and it gets hot blowing steam. What is the next thing to check? I want to pull the power head but want to make sure i approach it in the right manner. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Guys

What you describe makes sense to me.
When idling in neutral the pressure of the water at the under-water exhaust port is "dammed up", so water + exhaust escapes via the above-water "pee" hole(s). As you get under way, water is being forced past the under-water exhaust port and creates vacuum - an easier escape route for the water + exhaust. If your engine is air-cooled, then the pumped water is intended to cool the region under the power head where the exhaust is ported, so hot exhaust + water = steam - some of which will escape through the "pee" hole(s).

The 9.9s are water cooled, and it sounds like maybe you got dirt daubers or spiders trashin' up you water passages - it's able to move small quantities of water at low R's, but it's restricted at higer R's. I think I remember hearing that the water tube between the lower u and power head is prone to corrosion, too, so I guess you could be leaking inside the leg below the power head there. Some people replace them with copper tubing.

Hey Guys,
I thought I would update as to what I am finding maybe could use some more expert advice. I have completely torn down everything except the power head. I didn't find any blockage. Running in a barrel it would pee fine even in gear. I decided to take it to the river all seemed well until we would get on plane or close to it. Then the tell tail would die off as I slowed it would reappear. I was thinking something blocking as water flow increased lifting object into blocking area. Believe me completely "stumped" . SO we continued to run slow for a while as the motor worked well at low speeds. I adjusted the motor to the most tilted position and things were much better. Could this be some type of air lock issue? What temperature should tell tail water be?
Thanks for any advice.

I wonder if the leg's too short for the transom? If it is, that would explain why the pee goes away at plane - planing lifts the water intakes above the waterline.
