I am replacing my teleflex steering cable. It is the rack and pin style, 13 ft cable. The old one says it was made in may 1985. I bought a new cable off ebay and the seller is telling me it is a newer cable and needs their updated helm. It looks the same in the pic. but I have not received it yet. Can anyone tell me if there was a change in the cable over the years or will my helm work on this new cable? Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the st# of the new cable (Teleflex #SSC13413. 13 Ft Cable)

I have a 1985 helm. Are they compatible?

Re: Teleflex Rack and Pinion cable question??? need some advise.

I just discovered today that my steering cable is frozen and will be replacing it as soon as possible. I have a 1984 Four Winns Marquis 160 (16') so it sounds like we're working on similar problems. The replacement Teleflex cables don't specify different connection types, so I was hoping it was universal, but that's usually a bad assumption.

I'm subscribed to this thread and will update with my progress. I'm curious to know how yours works out.

I will update with the results when the cable comes in. I can buy a new helm for cheap if it turns out to need a updated version. Thanks for responding.

The new cable came in. It is a little diff and I had to order a new helm.

the part #'s are
cable:#ssc13413 13 ft rack and pin
new helm: #sh5210/5215
The new rack is wider and the bolt pattern is a bit bigger.

We're still neck-and-neck in our race to get back on the water. I ended up ordering the cable-helm combo (Teleflex SS14113) but I haven't gotten it all the way in yet.

The stern end of the cable seems to be pretty standardized and it fit right into my transom-mount steering thing. I tested the new rack with my existing helm/pinion and it wasn't compatible in my boat either. The new rack is just a hair wider and the bolts wouldn't have lined up right, so I was glad I got the helm included.

Where I'm stuck now is that the new helm needs a bigger hole cut in the dash and the hole-saw needs a center point to start with. I didn't have any plywood or anything out at the boat to make a jig to keep the saw in one place. Hopefully tomorrow everything will come together.

good luck to you

I hope I dont run into that problem. You will prob be boating before me. I still am waiting on seal kits to repair my tilt trim unit along with the helm. I made new pads for it last year and have to install them. I also put new carpet in it and have the middle section to finish. I should be good to go in a couple more weekends. I work alot of hours and can only work on it here and there. Good luck to you as well. Here is a pic. from last year, first splash down with the new to me motor. I have done alot in the past two years to this clam.

Did you ever finish your steering up? I had to do a custom job on mine but its in, working, and looks like ebbtide put it in.

I sure did; once I got the bigger hole cut in the dashboard installation of the new helm and cable was really easy and the steering feels great. I never realized how stiff my original steering had been all along. I actually had to adjust a bit to how freely it spun.

good luck to you in the rest of the season
