1978 85 hp Johnson, got a problem... trying to change the steering cable (teleflex "the rack") steering cable, 8'.... cant seem to be able to get the engine side cable out of the housing... check pics... we banged and grunted and pushed and shoved but to no avail... short of using a blowtorch and angle grinder to cut it off, seems like the angle grinder cut would be counter productive given the situation, cant get the damn thing out!!! little help? am i doing something wrong??? ive taken the steering arm nut off and the starboard side nut off as well, seems like the tube? for lack of a better word is coming out with the steering arm, but get to a point and neither will go any further.... thanks for any help you guys could provide... im at a loss/ground to a halt...!!! any help please!!

Re: Teleflex Rack Steering System Problem

I had to unbolt my motor and move it as far as it would to port.

Re: Teleflex Rack Steering System Problem

Had a similiar problem changing mine also. I found that I had too little room to extract the old cable in a straight line. Ended up removing mounting bolts from the transom and used an engine hoist to raise the engine and shift it port side a few inches. Came right out after that. After a little cleaning, the new one went right in. Hope this helps, maybe someone else has an easier method.

Re: Teleflex Rack Steering System Problem

ok thanks, ive got a feeling that the "tube" that the steering cable goes thru shouldnt have come out that far? should it have moved at all? i was loosening anything i could to get it to move freely... the cable seems to be stuck in the "tube" it wont budge.... what can i do about that? i understand that i may need to break the motor loose and install that way, but that doesnt seem to explain why the steering cable didnt come out clean??? or am i missing something... to add, the starboard side of the cable seems to move independently of the port side, it doesnt appear to be broken as i was able to move it some.... thanks again for any help, im totally stuck now with a new cable on the way....
