How do I get the Safe-T Steering Cable seperated from the helm? I need to replace the cable but when I pull the pin it still doesn't come apart.......How does it work?

Re: Teleflex Safe-T Steering Cable

Sounds like the cable is rusted to the tilt tube. Most of the time a combination of old grease and rust in this tube that cause the steering to "freeze".

Remove the nuts at both end of the tube then spary penetrating fluid in the tube and tap the outside of the tube to loosen the rust inside. With a long rod and hammer try tapping the rod against the steering cable to "punch" it out. Try not to punch too hard or you'll damage the cable and/or tube. If it's still stuck, then you'll have to cut the cable and do a number on the remant inside the tube inorder to punch it out. :(

Reel Kahuna you have me confused!!!

Steering works.........cable goes in and out. I want to remove the ENTIRE cable assembly from the helm box in order to replace it. The cable rotates inside of the helm box, but won't come out of the helm box so it can be replaced.

CG,
Try pulling the cable out from the helm underneath just a little. There's a groove in the end that the pin you pulled out nestles into. This may be the issue. And give it a GOOD yank...

Then crank the wheel. That's how the cable is installed into the helm. Removal is just the opposite.

Sorry, I mis-read your post.

At this point, I'd remove the steering wheel, unbolt the rotary box from the mounting bracket then feed the cable out from the motor and remove the entire assembly. This way, you can place the helm in a vise. This will allow you to give it a good inspection and figure out what's stopping it from coming out.

Re: Teleflex Safe-T Steering Cable

OK, so I've removed the entire steering system and it's laying on the driveway, I've pulled the pin and tried to pull the cable out of the helm box with a NO GO! I stood on the cable and tried to lift the helm box above my head, still a NO GO.......

It says Safe-T Steering System right on the back of the box................am I going to have to replace EVERYTHING?

With my Teleflex, you pull the pin out of the holder and push and hold it into another slot and while doing so, pull on the outer sheath to release, then turn the wheel to unwind the cable from the mechanism.

Re: Teleflex Safe-T Steering Cable

it's done...........there was a round thing right next to the pin. I pushed it in with the pin and it popped out. I turned the wheel and out came the cable.

Thanks JEEP MAN!
