Re: teleflex sahara gauges?

I just finished putting a set in my Ranger. The graphics on the faceplates look much better than the stock units that came with the boat. I'm not impressed with the lighting in them, however. Yea, the light shines thru the red markings of the faceplates for red graphics and some white light comes from the perimeter. The problem is that there is only one bulb in the top of each gauge. In the larger spedo and tach this results in the top of the gauge being fairly bright and the bottom fairly dim - It's pretty uneven. For me their fine. 99% of my boating is in the sunlight and I think they look great. My Wife thinks I'm crazy for pulling out five good gauges just for a different look. Oh well, she'll get over it. I'll try to post some pictures.

I have them in my walleye boat and would agree with the above. If you really need them for serious night time operation, they are not lit very well. However, you must remember that gauges that light too brightly begin messing with your night vision. These gauges are adequate for that, it's just that they could have used two bulbs -- one at either side rather than one at the top.

Re: teleflex sahara gauges?

Are you trolling while night fishing" If not, you really don't need the instrument lights on when the engine is not running. In fact they should be wired to the ANC (anchor) position on the ANC/NAV light switch. They come on when the switch is in the NAV position and are off in the OFF or ANC position. Some manufacturers even wire them so they are on whenever the key is in the RUN position. That is simply a waste. If there is a separate switch for instrument lights that's fine too. No need to have the battery power being sucked up by lights that don't need to be on.

Yeah, My boat was wired that way. Lights on at all times. When I got the new gauges I saw where it was recommended to wire the blue leads for the lights to the navigation light circuit. It took forever to find where the purple ignition hot lead was connected to a blue lead that then split to 5 individual blues for the lights. Now that I know where it is, it?s just a matter of finding the best place to tap into running lights. My next project.
