I am trying to remove the teleflex steering cable on my 1999 Trophy 1703CC and I am idiot or something. For the life of me I cant figure out how the cable come out of the helm. Looks integrated to the helm I know the helms cant be disassembled but do they ever have the cable a permanent part of the hephoto(2).jpgphoto(3).jpglm?

Re: Teleflex Steering Cable Help

The larger knuckle has two bolts out by themselves, remove just those 2 bolts, that piece clamps the cable to it. Then rotate the steering shaft to push the cable out. don't take the whole thing apart like I did!

BUZZZZZZER! Wrong, I actually know something just buying one myself.

See that hole on the right side of the first picture. You need to push a pin in it that's supposed to be clipped to the cable still.

That will free the key/lock that holds the cable in the helm unit. I would suggest a screw driver thin enough if you don't have the tip of a cotter pin.

touch? - upon further inspection I see mikeneal has no bolts there, so the pin must release it aye? It isn't like mine but very simular!

I looked at it again and can't figure out the release. There was/is a pin that held the pigtail side tube ( where cable goes when it travels thru the helm). The main side rotates in the helm but for the life of me I can't figure out how the cable is captured in the helm.

Re: Teleflex Steering Cable Help

Not sure this will help. I put a new helm and cable on my boat this spring. To remove the instructions say to push The "hitch" pin in the hole, apply pressure and pull the cable body away from the helm. The hitch pin should have been inserted into the helm in that little slot parallel to the cable as a lock . I don't see it in your pictures, did you already remove it? I couldn't do it alone, took a lot of pressure to push pin in the hole hard enough and pull on the cabel at the same time. Mine was installed in the boat and I was laying on my back.. Any object of a size that you can push into the hole will work. Mine is new but sure looks the same as yours. It is a SAFE-T II helm. The NFB 4.2 model says to remove the two bolts.

I looked again and I do see the "hitch" pin. Its the one on your bench with the tag on it. Push the end of it into the hold hard and pull.
