Hey all,
I've looked all over these forums for a detailed way to remove a steering cable for my situation but have yet to find it. I appreciate all the help y'all have given me indirectly so any help on this would be greatly appreciated
Here's the situation- I have a '99 18.5' Rinker Runabout, with 4.2L V6 Mercruiser engine. Mechanic was doing his yearly tuneup a month ago and said the steering cable needs replaced. I took it out a few times since then and boy was he right- it felt like I was steering in silly putty.
So now I'm trying to take the thing out and replace it, but I can figure out how. Below the steering wheel, it looks like the wheel is connected to a rack, and the cable sheath goes into this. The rack says something along the lines of disassembly of this mechanism will cause failure, so I'm not sure taking it apart is the right way to go. The line going into the rack doesn't have a quick connect that people on other forums are mentioning. How do I get the dang thing off?
Next, the cable runs down to the engine and from the looks of it connects to the steering tube? with a big nut. I tried taking that nut off but when i do the metal tube on the opposite part of the engine spins around and I cant loosen it up. It doesn't look like there's anywhere good on the tube to grab ahold of to prevent it from rotating when i try to loosen the nut.
I know I sound like a newbie describing all this but I've managed to do other work on my boat and this seemingly simple job has me pretty perplexed. Any ideas?
