Teleflex steering cable replacement

I had to replace the steering cable on my 1994 Boston Whaler Rage Jet Boat. I got the new cable, and there was no rack on it. I'm confused and don't know what to do. Can I just buy a rack? The cable part #'s are identical, so I know I got the right cable. Why wasn't the rack on it?

Also, I am a new member and this is my first post. I hope I chose the right category.

I just bougth this boat and my first fix is the steering cable. I am not that familiar with the boat, and want to learn a lot about it, and restore it. This will be my first little project I will be working on in my spare time.

Is the rack on the end of a threaded cable? can it be swaped?

Put the old one back in and oil it till you get the probem rectified, May 24 is around the corner.

The racks don't usually wear out. Unbolt the 4 bolts from the back of the old rack and drop the cable off. The new one just bolts back on.

Sorry to differ lmuss53, the rack gets flimsy after years of use noticeable by play in the steering wheel. As long as the teeth don't jump should be ok.Teleflex

Here are some photo's of the rack.

It's obvious that someone got a hold of this rack before I did.

Like I said my new cable did not come with the rack.

Do I need to order a new cable with the rack?

Is there somewhere I can buy just the rack?

Can I use this old rack?

My boat sinks if there is no beer in it.

I'm not sure if I can use the old one.

Show us a picture of the new cable and the helm, or whatever is left up under the steering console. I've got a teleflex rack steering system from a 17 foot CC. I am going to ebay it, if you're interested send me a PM. I've got the entire setup.

What you are showing there is the beat up end of the cable half of one of these setups. The cable has been pried out, that is junk.

I agree. The rack you have is not safe to use. Go to the place where you bought your cable and see if they can help with a new rack.

You are right I am going to have to bite the bullet! I learned today from Lisa at turbojetmarineproducts.com that someone jerry rigged the old cable that was in the boat to work with the old rack. That's why there were already pry marks on it that I saw when I took it off. Thanks for all the input. My problem is solved. I will just have to buy the kit, and replace it the right way. I am not a jerry rigger, and want this done right! Thanks to everyone that helped out! I hope I didn't start an unneccesary thread. I am learning and will keep doing research before I start a new one.

I got a new steering system today from boatstoreusa.com. I bought the cable I thought I needed originally from them. They gave me a new teleflex oatary steering system for $30 more than what I paid for the cable ($97). They also threw in a new steering wheel. There's no way or any other place I could have gotten a whole new steering system for under $130. I also live in Florida and down the street from one of boatstoreusa's shipping office, so I had to pay Florida sales tax also. Great deal from boatstoreusa! Any and every part I need (so far) seems to be the cheapest of any place out there.

Sounds like you got a great deal from the retailer.
Glad to see you bought whole new system. The other one you had was not safe to use.
Put in that new system and get on the water.

Ok, so the great deal I got from boatstoreusa.com didn't end up to be the right deal after all. I got a call the next day from the guy who sold me the cable. He said after I left with the steering set up he sold me, he second guessed himself and did some reasearch to see if he gave me the right system. Come to find out he didn't. So finally I got the right set up. I got the cable (SSC21910 Teleflex Steering Cable 5/16-28 Threaded Ends) for $97, and then a whole new helm (135? Jet boat helm SH5087P) and steering wheel for $148. Puts my total at $245. I still got a great deal. Anywhere else I looked on the web, the price for the right set up I needed was over $300.

The only thing I need to complete the job is a bezel. I found one on eBay for $18 (shipping included) buy it now. I'll probably order it today.

I also spent all weekend putting in the new cable. What a pain in the arse! I made it difficult on myself though because I had no clue what I was doing. Finally got it in (effortlessly) once I removed all the screws in the floor holding down the center console, and propped to center console up about 1.5 inches with the igloo cooler floor brackets. If I had to do the job now, it would probably take me about an hour tops.
