Teleflex steering for use with older outboards?

i have steering system issues with my 1954 14' Duratech. I am looking at the Teleflex steering systems, but i can't find any information on making them work with older outboards. I have a couple older Evinrude outbourds ranging from 1956 to 1975. steering hook ups are the same.

I also saw a "Uflex" brand? they have an adapter and the steering kit is significantly less $$$ than the Teleflex. does anyone have pro's/cons, or any information or comments on using these systems?

The boat really wont get a whole lot of use over the course of a year...a few times tooling around on the lake or pond and a few island camping trips...so if one brand is a Cadilac and the other is a Chevy...i would be ok with the chevy, based on my usage.

Thanks,
DW

The experts on this forum, which I am NOT, can help you with this issue. I experienced the same problem and will share my knowledge. I replaced a cable&pulley steering system with a Teleflex rotary system in my Glastron V-153 powered by a 1959 Johnson 35HP. Teleflex previously had a Steering Connection Kit for J&E 40HP and below, p/n SA27198/27199. I do not believe it is still available now. Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you a copy of that instruction sheet with diagrams. FYI, I later upgraded the motor to a 1962 V-4 Johnson 75HP and used the same steering system with a different motor connection kit.

There are some horsepower limits for some Teleflex helms and cables that you need to work through on their website. Try this link below to their library:

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/cgi-bin/library.cgi?site=steering&type=us&library=1018

I purchased a Uflex rotary helm and cable for my current boat from a local dealer who was going out of business last year. The ram end of the cable and the cable coupler nut appear to be compatible with Teleflex motor connection hardware as far as I can tell.

Good luck!

I have a Uflex and I see little difference between it and the Teleflex. It was cheaper though.

Uflex is owned by teleflex.

Im not the Pro here, but when i was looking for my parts, the Uflex guy said they weren't owned by Teleflex...they are competitors.

Anyway,

I ordered my stuff and got it last week. I had located a used steering helm and cables (correct length for my boat), but still needed the clamp block and clevis kit for my outboard.

The cables i have say "morse", which after doing some eading, is teleflex. The clamp block and clevis kit i bought are Uflex. While similar products from each company are different, they work together. My biggest concern was with the support tube threads matching up with the nut on the cables. It did. I had asked reps from both companies before ordering...Teleflex wasn't much help, the Uflex guy was very confidant that it would work.

I got my 2 Uflex parts shipped for less than the best Teleflex clamp block price i could find.

I am waaaay late on responding to this!

Willyclay you were very helpful, thank you! I did get everything hooked up and it works great. I didn't use my boat much at all last year...a couple shakedown runs and 1 island camping trip.

This year, my boat is up at my buddies camp on a lake and gets put in and run on the weekends.

Work in progress:

Don't have any pictures from this year yet...i will have some this fall though. We are doing another old boat fishing trip
