Depending on the model you are probably right, but some cables are still availible most come with the rack attached from teleflex

Re: teleflex steering ?????

Teleflex has support for their steering products going back to the '70s. They even make adapters to put new cables on old helms. I'm surprised that they would make a steering unit that you can't change the cable in. What model is it?

Dual cable systems are fairly new.

Do you see pins that go through the helm unit where the cables attach? If so, they're replaceable.

To remove the cables, back of the retaining nuts, pull the pins and turn the wheel counterclockwise. The cable ends will wind right out.

Reverse for installation of new ones.

Maximerc,
Not trying to highjack your post, but I've got questions concerning the Teleflex steering as well.I've torn everything out of my boat including the steering wheel all the way back to the motor. It was all rusted and trashed anyway.I hope to install one of those Teleflex "rack" systems along with a new steering wheel, etc. My concern is whether or not the cables that come with the Teleflex system will connect with the old '58 Evinrude. The cables I ripped out had connecters that appeared very proprietary to the motor. Is the Teleflex cable gonna connect without a lot of hassle?

Geekomatic,

DJ is right. Search this forum for old steering posts. A few months ago I posted a picture of that hardware on a boat for peoples reference. Should still be there.

Mark

Yup.Still got the old push/pull cables and pulleys sitting in a box.I was hoping the Teleflex system came with these extra connectors, considering the cost of the system.Looks like I gotta go and sell another quart of blood to finance this stuff. :p
Thanks Again Guys!
