I'm installing a new Teleflex Red Tach to the boat. The old tach just stopped working. The tach for the year johnson I have says to ask the dealer this. The adjustment for the tach is set to 6P by default...should it be there or on 6C? Or something different. Right now with it in 6P it doesn't zero out when I turn on the key.

6 (P) pulse would be the correct setting. Does it do anything when you turn the key to on?

Does nothing that is what I am surprised at. I checked the connections -- ground, send, ignition..it looks like the same poles are the same for both the old guage and the new. The old guage didn't move at all when the rpm's kicked in...but it did zero. If it would be the rectifier other than taking it back to the river and testing the charging on the battery with my volt meter, would there another way of testing? Or any other advice on what it may be?

THe wires for ign. and send are mistakenly reversed in the following Teleflex instructions, but you can figure it out:

I called the Teleflex support line. He mentioned that the tach should work fine for my engine and that it is in fact 6P for my motor. Then also mentioned that the ing and the send were reversed about 4 years ago from what they where.

So are you saying that the manual which I link too is incorrect or do you mean for me to try and reverse the two and try it then?

I don't know. The guy said they reversed them. Did he say why? I sent them an email about the reversed wiring. They haven't replied yet.

yeah he said the industry reversed them about 3 or 4 years ago from what they were. I called the boat dealer the master mechanic agreed. He said he just installed one and needed to reverse them. We'll see. Hope it works. What was strange overall was that the tach when I first got it back from the motor work done...water pump replaced..the tach would wave and then just stopped working. And man what a mess of wires underneath that dash to follow. I'm going to replace all the guages now: Speedo, volt, trim, gas.

markings on the tachometer....power to IGN, signal wire to SEND.

Thank you..I'll reverse the wires...see what happens...if I still get nothing give it to the master mechanic and let him figure it out.

I was able to hook up the water pressure guage with no problems though :)

Ok got word from the dealer. The motor has a bad rectifier that caused the tach not to work. And while I was installing the guages I blew the 20amp fuse by the motor. I didn't know it was there. He put the 20amp fuse..and everything he said works but the tach..which I have on order for them to put in.
