Okay I slapped in new rings, bearings all the way around, Carb kit, rebuilt starter, all electric and wiring still good. Here's my thing...I was like what the heck is this 90? elbow doing with all my gaskets? After I fired her up in test tank and lync n sync and ss needle adjusted, water pumping good but she still gets to hot for me. So i was looking around in forums about cooling and came across the "tell tale" lmao...well whaddyaknow that's what it is. Even though she's spitting good water I like to have the peace of mind of mounting this. Anyone have any similar or exact rude that did this? Model 40655a...I looked at tell tale section already but would prefer another opinion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, but adding a tell tale won't help cool your motor. Its only a indicator that the water pump is working.

Most motors will have a 143 or a 130% stat in them. You should be able to hold your hand on the exhaust water jacket cover for quite some time or get a temp color stick and mark the block to see if the motor is getting hotter than that temp stick. Adding a tell tail might be able to be done IF the flat area under the lifting ring,on the top of the block can be drilled and taped to add the elbow that came with the kit. Another option would be to see if a newer motor of simaler size with a hole for the tell tail elbow would fit on your motor. I used a 1980 30Hp exhaust plate on a 1976 25Hp motor to add a tell tail on the motor. Adding a tell tail will not help cool the motor any, it will only make it easier to see that the water is flowing as it should. JMO

Okay, I have the exact same Make, Model, HP Rating and Year engine that you posted about. There is no thermostat in this engine. WHY? I have no earthly idea. But I also wanted a Tale Tell stream to verify that the water pump (impellor) is operating properly and so I decided to install a brass 90 degree elbow in the top of the crank case for that ability. Here are three pictures of how and where I installed mine. I took and drilled out the boss casting in the very top right behinds the lifting hook and then taped it with a ?” NPT tap. I used the recommended drill size for that type fitting. Then I took a smaller drill bit and very slowly and carefully as to not mark or drill into the top cylinder at all, drilled all the way through the case to the water jacket. Then I cleaned out all the filings being how I have this engine totally apart for rebuilding. But you could easily put some grease in the hole and drill slowly to catch those filings and not let any get into the water system (although they would probably just get washed out when running). Not really hard to do. I purchased the 90 degree elbow off EBay for a few dollars and it too was ?” NPT threaded. So everything is looking great. Once I finally get this engine primed and painted, I’ll use some Teflon tape (I know it really isn’t needed in a tapered thread) and put a wrap or two on the threads and install for final... On the lower cowl casing section I plan on using a straight barbed fitting for the output as well. Hope this helps you with your decision and placement for your Tale Tell setup.
